Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اللهم (Allahumma): O Allah — a form of address used exclusively for supplication to Allah.
- فأمطر (fa-amṭir): Rain down or pour down — used here to mean causing something to fall from the sky abundantly.
- حجارة (ḥijārah): Stones — specifically, a punishment of stones from heaven.
- عذاب أليم (ʿadhāb alīm): A painful, severe torment or punishment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah reminds His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) of the shocking and defiant words of the polytheists of Quraysh. When the Prophet called them to the truth of Islam and recited the Qur’an to them, they responded not with reflection or humility, but with arrogance and mockery. They said: "O Allah, if this (Qur’an) is indeed the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky, or bring us a painful punishment."
This statement was made by al-Naḍr ibn al-Ḥārith and others who, in their stubbornness, challenged the truth with sarcasm. When the Prophet told al-Naḍr that the Qur’an is the word of Allah, he replied dismissively, "If this is truly from You, then send stones upon us or a torment" — not out of genuine belief, but as a taunt, showing their absolute certainty that it was not the truth. They thought they were safe from any divine consequence, and so they dared Allah to punish them if the message were real.
This verse exposes the extreme arrogance of the disbelievers — they demanded punishment as a challenge, rather than seeking guidance. Yet, Allah, in His mercy and wisdom, did not immediately destroy them, giving them time to repent and believe. Indeed, many of them later embraced Islam, and those who persisted in disbelief faced the consequences of their defiance in this world and the next.
A Da’wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us the profound patience and mercy of Allah. Despite the mockery and insolence of the disbelievers, Allah did not hasten their punishment — He gave them respite, opening the door for repentance. How often do we, as human beings, test Allah’s patience with our sins and heedlessness? Yet Allah remains Forgiving and Merciful, waiting for us to turn back to Him. The Qur’an is the ultimate truth, and no challenge or mockery can diminish its light. As believers, we should be grateful for the gift of guidance, and we should never take Allah’s mercy for granted. Let this verse be a reminder to submit wholeheartedly to the truth before it is too late, and to call others to Islam with wisdom and gentleness, showing them the beauty of faith rather than the arrogance of denial.
