Key Words and Phrases:
- "Those with whom you made a covenant" — refers to specific groups, such as the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayzah, who entered into treaties with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
- "Then break their covenant every time" — meaning they violate their agreements repeatedly, on every occasion they make one.
- "And they do not fear Allah" — they have no consciousness of Allah or reverence for Him, which is why they feel no guilt in betraying their promises.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the character of a particular group of people—identified in the context of the Prophet’s time as the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayzah and their allies—who entered into peace treaties and solemn agreements with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), promising not to fight against him or support his enemies. Yet, time after time, they broke their word. They would renew a covenant, and then, at the very next opportunity, they would treacherously side with the polytheists, supplying them with weapons and support against the Muslims. Their repeated betrayal was not born of ignorance but of a hardened heart, for they had no fear of Allah—no awareness that He sees all deeds and will hold every soul accountable. They did not honor their commitments, nor did they respect the sacred nature of a promise, even though keeping one’s word is a fundamental principle of faith and morality.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: the sanctity of a promise. In Islam, a covenant is not merely a piece of paper or a verbal agreement—it is a trust from Allah. When you give your word, you are standing before Allah, and He is the Witness over your pledge. The Qur’an repeatedly praises those who "fulfill their promises" and warns against those who break them, for such behavior is a mark of hypocrisy. Imagine the beauty of a society where people honor their commitments—where trust is the currency of relationships, and where even an enemy can feel safe in your word. This is the character of a true Muslim: one who is so conscious of Allah that they would never betray a trust, no matter the temptation. Let this verse inspire you to be a person of integrity—someone whose word is as solid as a mountain, and whose faithfulness to promises draws others to the light of Islam. For when people see your honesty, they see the beauty of your faith, and they are moved to ask: "What makes this person so trustworthy?" The answer is simple: the fear of Allah and the love of His Messenger.
