Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Talahhā (تَلَهَّى): To turn away, to be preoccupied with someone or something else, to neglect or ignore out of busyness with another matter.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a gentle yet firm tone, following the incident when a blind companion, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, came seeking guidance while the Prophet was engaged in conversation with the leaders of the Quraysh, hoping they might embrace Islam. The verse says: "But you, from him, you turn away."
The meaning is: You are preoccupied with others—namely, the prominent figures of the polytheists—and you neglect the one who came to you eagerly, seeking the truth. This was not a rebuke of the Prophet's intention, for his desire to guide the influential leaders was noble, but it was a divine correction of priorities. The one who comes to you with a sincere heart, fearing Allah and longing for guidance, deserves your full attention, for his faith is more precious than the fleeting hope of converting the arrogant elite.
The verse teaches that the measure of a person's worth is not their social status, wealth, or influence, but their sincerity and hunger for the truth. The blind man's eagerness was a sign of his pure heart, while the wealthy leaders' indifference showed their pride. Allah, in His wisdom, wanted to instill in His Messenger—and in every believer after him—the principle that no seeker of truth should ever be turned away, regardless of their worldly standing.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a timeless lesson for all of us. How often do we prioritize the influential and the powerful while ignoring the sincere and the humble? How often do we chase after those who turn away from us, while neglecting those who knock on our doors with open hearts? The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most perfect of creation, yet Allah corrected him with love—not to humiliate him, but to teach his Ummah (community) a profound principle: that sincerity outweighs status, and that the seeker of guidance is the most deserving of our time and care.
Let this verse inspire you to look at those around you with the eyes of faith. The poor, the disabled, the marginalized—they may carry in their hearts a light that the wealthy and powerful lack. When someone comes to you seeking knowledge, seeking Allah, or seeking help on the path of righteousness, receive them with warmth and full attention. For in serving them, you serve the very cause of Islam, and in honoring them, you honor the One who sent this revelation.
And know that Allah, the Most Merciful, did not leave this correction without comfort. He immediately followed it with praise for the Quran and its noble carriers, reminding the Prophet—and us—that this divine message is a mercy and a guide, and that the one who delivers it with sincerity is beloved to Allah, even if his priorities are gently adjusted. So take heart, dear believer, and strive to be among those who value the sincere seeker over the arrogant rejecter, for that is the way of the righteous and the path to Allah's pleasure.
