Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yakhshā (يَخْشَىٰ): Fears, stands in awe of, or holds reverential fear of Allah. This is not mere fright, but a profound, conscious awareness of Allah’s presence and accountability—a fear that drives one to seek guidance and act righteously.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes a believer who approaches the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with sincerity and eagerness to learn, while his heart trembles with the fear of Allah—fear of falling short in his duties, fear of displeasing his Lord, and a deep desire to purify his soul through divine guidance. This person is not arrogant or heedless; rather, he is humble, seeking truth with a pure intention.
The verse comes in the context of a gentle but firm rebuke to the Prophet (peace be upon him) for turning his attention away from such a sincere seeker (the blind companion, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum) to focus on the wealthy and influential leaders of Quraysh, hoping they might embrace Islam. Allah corrects this priority: the one who comes to you with a trembling heart, fearing his Lord and yearning for guidance, is far more deserving of your attention than those who are self-sufficient and indifferent.
This teaches us a timeless principle: true honor lies not in worldly status or wealth, but in the sincerity of one’s heart and the depth of one’s reverence for Allah. The believer who fears Allah and seeks knowledge is beloved to Him, regardless of their social standing.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: When you approach the Qur’an, when you listen to reminders, when you seek knowledge—does your heart tremble with the awareness of Allah? Do you come with humility, eager to be corrected and guided? This verse invites you to be that person—the one whose fear of Allah opens the doors of wisdom and mercy. It reminds you that Allah values your sincere turning to Him more than any worldly achievement. So, be like this blessed seeker: come to the truth with a humble heart, and let your fear of Allah be the compass that leads you to His light. For the one who fears Allah is never abandoned; rather, Allah elevates him, purifies his soul, and grants him success in this life and the next.
