Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "Your companion" (صاحبكم): This refers to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who lived among the people of Makkah for forty years before his prophethood. They knew him intimately—his honesty, his integrity, and his sound mind.
- "Is not mad" (بمجنون): The accusation of madness was a desperate attempt by the disbelievers to dismiss the truth he brought. The word "mad" here implies insanity, loss of reason, or being possessed by jinn—all of which were utterly false.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this powerful verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) addresses the people of Makkah directly, reminding them that the man who brought them the Qur'an is not insane. This is Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—the very person they had known all their lives. He was the trustworthy one, *Al-Ameen*, whose sound judgment, truthfulness, and noble character were never questioned before he received the revelation. They knew he was not mad; their accusation was nothing but stubborn denial and slander.
Allah swears by the magnificent cosmic signs mentioned earlier in the surah—the fading stars, the shaking earth, the blazing fire—to affirm that this revelation is the word of a noble messenger (Angel Jibreel), not the ramblings of a madman or the whispers of an accursed devil. The Qur'an is pure truth, delivered by a pure heart, to a pure soul, for the guidance of all humanity.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: how could a man known for his perfect reason and unmatched honesty suddenly become "mad" when he began calling people to worship the One True God? The accusation of madness is the last resort of those who have no argument against the truth. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was not mad—he was the most sane, the most wise, and the most compassionate of all people. His message brought light to a darkened world, and his character was a living proof of his truthfulness.
Let this verse be a reminder to you: when you encounter the Qur'an, approach it with an open heart and a sound mind. It is not the word of a poet, a soothsayer, or a madman—it is the word of Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. The one who brought it was the best of creation, and the path he called to is the path of eternal success. Embrace it, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next.
