Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Muṭā‘ (مُطَاعٍ): Obeyed; one whose commands are carried out and who is obeyed by others.
  • Thamma (ثَمَّ): There; meaning in the heavens, in the highest realms.
  • Amīn (أَمِينٍ): Trustworthy; one who is faithful and reliable in delivering what has been entrusted to him.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah continues to describe the magnificent messenger who delivers the Qur’an—Gabriel (peace be upon him). After mentioning his strength and high rank with the Lord of the Throne, Allah now adds two more of his sublime qualities:

First, he is obeyed (muṭā‘) there in the heavens—meaning that all the angels obey him and carry out his commands. He holds a position of authority and leadership among the celestial beings, and his word is heeded without question. This is a testament to his elevated station and the honor Allah has bestowed upon him.

Second, he is trustworthy (amīn)—he is faithful to the trust placed in him. He delivers the revelation exactly as it was revealed to him, without adding, omitting, or altering anything. He is the guardian of the divine message, carrying it with complete integrity from the Preserved Tablet to the heart of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

This description serves to reassure humanity of the absolute authenticity and purity of the Qur’an. The message we hold in our hands today has passed through the hands of a messenger who is both powerful and obedient, honored and utterly trustworthy. When such a being conveys a message, there can be no doubt about its truthfulness.

Reflection and Call to Faith:

Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this divine arrangement. The same Qur’an that guides you through the darkness of ignorance and confusion was delivered by a noble angel who is obeyed in the highest heavens and trusted with the most precious treasure—the words of Allah Himself. This is not a message that came through an unreliable channel or a doubtful source. It is a revelation guarded at every step, from the heavens above to the earth below.

When you open the Qur’an, know that you are holding a book that the angels themselves honor and obey its carrier. Let this fill your heart with certainty and love for this divine guidance. The One who sent this message, and the angel who delivered it, and the Prophet who received it—all are worthy of your trust. So turn to the Qur’an with an open heart, let it illuminate your path, and let it be your companion in this life and your intercessor in the next. Indeed, in its verses lies your success, and in its guidance lies your salvation.

📜 Verse 19-23 — At-Takwir

[That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger
[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],
Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.
And your companion is not [at all] mad.
And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon.
