Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • تُسْقَى (Tusqa): They are given to drink.
  • مِنْ عَيْنٍ (Min 'Ayn): From a spring or fountain.
  • آنِيَةٍ (Aniyah): Extremely hot, boiling, having reached the utmost degree of heat.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that Day, the faces of the disbelievers will be humiliated and covered with disgrace. They will be exhausted and worn out from the severe punishment they endure. They will be given to drink from a spring whose heat has reached its ultimate peak—boiling water that scalds their faces and burns their insides as they are forced to swallow it. This is not a drink of mercy or relief; rather, it is a drink of torment that adds to their agony.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the reality of Hellfire—a place where even the water is a source of punishment, not comfort. The spring mentioned here is not like any spring on earth; it is a spring of fire-like heat, so intense that it has reached the absolute limit of boiling. When the disbelievers drink from it, it will tear their intestines and add to their suffering, as mentioned in other verses of the Qur'an.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. The very thing that quenches thirst and gives life in this world—water—becomes a source of unbearable agony in the Hereafter for those who reject the truth. This is a reminder of the consequences of turning away from Allah's guidance. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left us without a way out. He has sent the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to guide us to safety. The path to Paradise is open, and the gates of repentance are never closed. Let this vivid description of Hell motivate you to draw closer to your Lord, to seek His forgiveness, and to strive for the eternal bliss of Paradise, where rivers flow with water that is pure and delightful, and where no harm or fatigue shall touch you. Choose wisely, for this life is but a fleeting moment, and the Hereafter is the true and everlasting abode.
