Tafsir (Explanation):
Among the hypocrites, there were those who caused harm to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with their words and mockery. They would say about him: "He is all ears" — meaning that he listens to everyone and believes whatever he is told, without distinguishing between truth and falsehood. They used this as a way to belittle him and to justify their own deceitful behavior, thinking that they could say anything and he would accept it.
Allah commanded His Prophet to respond to their mockery with a dignified and powerful reply: "Say: He is an ear of good for you." This means: Even if he listens, he listens only to what is good and beneficial. He is not a naive listener who accepts everything blindly. Rather, he is an ear that receives goodness, believes in Allah with complete certainty, and trusts the sincere believers in what they convey to him — because they are truthful and trustworthy. And he is a mercy to those among you who have truly believed, for through him they were guided from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge, and from misguidance to the straight path.
His listening is not a weakness — it is a mercy. He listens to the complaints of the needy, the concerns of the weak, and the reports of the honest, so that he may guide them and relieve their burdens. But as for those who deliberately and persistently harm the Messenger of Allah — whether by words, actions, or mockery — for them is a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. No one who seeks to harm the beloved of Allah will escape His justice.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every Muslim. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was described by his enemies as "all ears" — yet Allah turned this mockery into a praise of his noble character. He is a mercy to the believers, a source of goodness, and a guide to truth. How beautiful is the character of the one whom Allah Himself defended and praised!
Let us learn from this: when people mock the truth or try to belittle the righteous, Allah elevates them and turns their mockery into honor. And let us also reflect — how can we claim to love the Prophet (peace be upon him) if we do not follow his example of mercy, patience, and trust in Allah? The Prophet was a mercy to all — let us strive to embody that same mercy in our dealings with others, and let us protect his honor by following his Sunnah and spreading his message with wisdom and beautiful preaching. For whoever harms the Messenger of Allah in word or deed has earned a painful punishment — but whoever follows him with love and sincerity has earned the greatest reward: the pleasure of Allah and eternal bliss in Paradise.
