Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمْ – They swear by Allah to you (the believers), making solemn oaths.
- لِيُرْضُوكُمْ – In order to please you and win your approval.
- أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ – More deserving that they should seek His pleasure.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse exposes the behavior of the hypocrites who, after being confronted with their harmful words or actions against the Prophet ﷺ and the believers, rush to swear false oaths by Allah. They fabricate excuses and make grand promises, all in a desperate attempt to appease the believers and escape accountability. Their sole aim is to smooth over the situation and avoid the consequences of their treachery.
Yet Allah, in His perfect wisdom, redirects their attention to what truly matters: Allah and His Messenger are far more deserving of being pleased than any human being. If these hypocrites were genuine in their faith, they would have directed their efforts toward earning the pleasure of Allah and His Messenger through sincere belief, obedience, and righteous deeds—not through empty words and deceptive oaths.
The verse subtly uses a singular pronoun in "أَن يُرْضُوهُ" (that they should please Him) even though it refers to both Allah and His Messenger. This is because the pleasure of Allah and the pleasure of His Messenger are inseparable—whoever pleases the Messenger has pleased Allah, and whoever displeases him has displeased Allah. True faith demands that one prioritizes divine pleasure over human approval.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim. How often do we find ourselves more concerned with pleasing people than with pleasing our Creator? We shape our words, adjust our behavior, and even compromise our principles just to gain the acceptance of others—while neglecting the One whose pleasure is the key to success in this life and the Hereafter.
The hypocrites swore by Allah falsely to deceive the believers, but their hearts were empty of true faith. A sincere believer, on the other hand, knows that the pleasure of Allah is the ultimate goal. When you prioritize Allah's pleasure, you will find that He places love and acceptance for you in the hearts of His righteous servants. As the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever seeks the pleasure of Allah even at the cost of people's displeasure, Allah will be pleased with him and will cause people to be pleased with him."
So ask yourself: Are your words and actions aimed at pleasing Allah, or merely at pleasing people? Let this verse be a gentle reminder to purify your intentions and always seek the highest pleasure—the pleasure of your Lord. For indeed, when Allah is pleased with you, nothing else in this world can truly harm you, and His reward is greater than anything people can offer.
