Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nakhud (نَخُوضُ): To engage in idle talk, to plunge into frivolous speech, or to jest while speaking.
  • Nal'ab (نَلْعَبُ): To play, to amuse oneself, or to joke without serious intent.
  • Tastahzi'un (تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ): To mock, to ridicule, or to make fun of someone in a belittling manner.

Tafsir (Explanation):

If you, O Prophet, were to ask these hypocrites about the offensive words they uttered against you and your companions, they would surely reply: "We were only talking idly and joking—we did not mean any harm by it." They try to dismiss their words as mere banter, as if jesting could erase the gravity of what they said. But Allah commands you to confront them directly: "Was it Allah, His verses, and His Messenger that you were mocking?" This is a severe rebuke, for their excuse is worse than the sin itself. They claim to be playing, yet their "play" targeted the most sacred of matters—the religion of Allah, His revelation, and His chosen Messenger.

This verse exposes the hypocrisy of those who, when confronted, hide behind flimsy excuses. Mocking the truth is not a light matter; it is a rejection of faith, regardless of whether it is said in jest or in seriousness. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions endured great hardship to convey this message, and to ridicule it is to trample upon the very mercy Allah sent to humanity.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. How often do we, in gatherings, make light of religious matters—joking about the Quran, the Sunnah, or the scholars—thinking it is harmless fun? This verse warns us that such mockery is a serious spiritual ailment that can strip a person of their faith without them even realizing it. The hypocrites thought their words were trivial, but Allah declared them a form of disbelief.

Islam is not a burden to be mocked; it is a treasure to be cherished. The Quran is the speech of your Lord, the Messenger ﷺ is the greatest of creation, and the verses of Allah are the light that guides you through darkness. How can a heart that loves these three ever find joy in ridiculing them?

Take this as a gentle yet firm reminder: guard your tongue, for it speaks what is in your heart. If you find yourself in a gathering where religion is being mocked, either speak the truth or leave. And if you have fallen into this sin, repent sincerely, for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. He loves those who turn back to Him, and He replaces their misdeeds with good deeds. Do not let Shaytan deceive you into thinking that jesting is insignificant—every word is recorded, and every soul will be held accountable.

May Allah purify our hearts, protect our tongues, and keep us steadfast upon His path. Ameen.

📜 Verse 63-67 — At-Tawbah

Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger - that for him is the fire of Hell, wherein he will abide eternally? That is the great disgrace.
They hypocrites are apprehensive lest a surah be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock [as you wish]; indeed, Allah will expose that which you fear."
And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"
Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.
The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites - it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.
