Key Words and Phrases:

  • Al-Najdayn (النَّجْدَيْنِ): Literally means "the two elevated paths" or "the two high roads." In this context, it refers to the two distinct and clear ways: the way of good (righteousness) and the way of evil (wickedness).

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah reminds humanity of His immense mercy and guidance. After mentioning in the preceding verses the gifts of sight, speech, and lips, Allah now says: "And We guided him to the two paths." This means that Allah, in His infinite wisdom and justice, has clearly explained and made known to every human being the path of goodness and righteousness, and the path of evil and corruption. He did not leave us in confusion or without direction. He gave us intellect, revelation through His Prophets, and an innate moral compass (Fitrah) to distinguish right from wrong. The word "Najdayn" (two elevated paths) signifies that both paths are clear, visible, and distinct—like two high mountain roads that cannot be mistaken for one another. Allah has laid out the consequences of each path: the path of gratitude, faith, and good deeds leads to eternal bliss, while the path of ingratitude, disbelief, and sin leads to ruin.

A Da'wah Reflection:

What an immense blessing this is! Our Lord, the Most Merciful, did not leave us to wander in darkness. He illuminated the way for us, showing us both the road to His pleasure and the road to His displeasure. This is a testament to His profound love and care for His creation. When you stand at a crossroads in life, remember that Allah has already placed a light within you—your conscience—and sent down His Book and His Messenger (peace be upon him) to guide you. The choice is yours, but the guidance is clear. So, embrace this divine gift with gratitude, and let your heart incline towards the path of light, for it leads to a life of peace here and everlasting success in the Hereafter. Let this awareness fill you with hope and determination, for you are never without divine direction.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Balad

8أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُ عَيْنَيْنِ
Have We not made for him two eyes?
9وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
And a tongue and two lips?
10وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ
And have shown him the two ways?
11فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
12وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
