Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Lisānan (لسانًا): The tongue, a means of speech, expression, and communication.
  • Shafatayn (شفتين): The two lips, which aid in articulation and can be closed to maintain silence.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah reminds humanity of His immense favors, asking rhetorically: Did We not give you a tongue and two lips? The tongue is a magnificent tool that allows you to speak, express your thoughts, praise your Lord, and communicate with others. The two lips work in harmony with the tongue to form words clearly and beautifully, and they can also be pressed together when you wish to remain silent, protecting you from uttering harmful or vain speech. This is a profound blessing that many take for granted—imagine life without the ability to speak or to control your words.

This verse follows the mention of the two eyes, highlighting a sequence of divine gifts that enable human perception and interaction. Together, these faculties are not merely physical; they are instruments for guidance. With the tongue, you can proclaim the truth, enjoin good, forbid evil, and call others to the path of righteousness. The lips remind you of the power of silence—a means to safeguard your tongue from lies, backbiting, and idle talk.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

O beloved reader, pause and reflect on this simple yet profound blessing. Every word you utter is a trust from Allah. Your tongue can be a key to Paradise when used for remembrance, gratitude, and kindness—or a key to Hellfire when used for slander, falsehood, and harm. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." This verse invites you to cherish this gift by using it in ways that please your Creator. Let your tongue be a witness to His oneness, and let your lips close over it when silence is wiser. This is not just a physical ability—it is a spiritual responsibility and a doorway to eternal success. Embrace it, and let your speech be a light that guides others to the beauty of Islam.

7أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ
Does he think that no one has seen him?
8أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُ عَيْنَيْنِ
Have We not made for him two eyes?
9وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
And a tongue and two lips?
10وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ
And have shown him the two ways?
11فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
