Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أَيَحْسَبُ — Does he think or assume?
  • أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ — That no one will ever have power over him or be able to hold him to account.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse poses a profound rhetorical question, awakening the human conscience: Does this person—who has been given wealth, strength, and status—truly imagine that no one can ever overpower him or call him to account? Does he really believe that his power and riches make him untouchable, beyond the reach of any consequence for his actions?

The verse addresses the arrogant soul that commits sins and transgressions, feeling secure in its false sense of invincibility. Such a person forgets—or chooses to ignore—that above every powerful being, there is the All-Powerful, the Almighty Creator who brought him into existence from nothing. The One who gave him strength can take it away in the blink of an eye. The One who granted him wealth can strip him of it instantly. The One who raised him can lower him to the dust.

This is a call to reflect: How can a weak human being, created from a drop of fluid, feel so secure that no power on earth or in the heavens can seize him? Every tyrant in history has met his end. Every oppressor has tasted the consequences of his deeds. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who controls life and death, is certainly able to hold every soul accountable for its deeds.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken something within you. The human being is fragile, limited, and dependent on Allah at every moment. When we feel strong, it is only because Allah has given us strength. When we feel secure, it is only because Allah has granted us security. So why do we behave as though we are beyond accountability? Why do we transgress, oppress, and sin as if no one is watching?

The beautiful message of Islam is that Allah is not only the All-Powerful—He is also the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving. He does not hasten to punish, but gives us time to return to Him. Yet, this mercy should never make us arrogant or careless. Instead, it should draw us closer to Him, filling our hearts with gratitude and humility.

So, before you act, remember: There is always One who is greater, One who sees all, One who has full power over everything. Live your life with this awareness, and you will find peace, purpose, and true success in this world and the Hereafter.
