Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "أَهْلَكْتُ" — I have spent, consumed, or squandered.
- "مَالًا لُبَدًا" — Abundant, accumulated wealth; wealth piled up in great quantities, layer upon layer.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the arrogant attitude of a person who proudly proclaims, "I have spent a vast amount of wealth!" — boasting of his expenditures, whether in acts of rivalry, opposition to the truth, or mere showmanship. The word "لُبَدًا" emphasizes that this wealth was not trivial; it was enormous, heaped up and amassed over time. Yet, in his pride, he fails to realize a fundamental truth: that Allah, the All-Seeing, witnesses every action, whether great or small, and will hold him to account for every single penny spent and every intention behind it. This is not merely a statement of fact — it is a challenge thrown in the face of the Almighty, as if to say, "Look what I have done!" But such boasting is hollow, for wealth is a trust from Allah, and its spending will be questioned on the Day of Judgment.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: How often do we fall into the same trap? We spend, we give, we build — and then we boast, seeking praise and admiration. But the One who truly matters is Allah. He sees not only the outward act but the inner motive. If we spend in His cause, for His pleasure, then our wealth becomes a means of elevation — but if we spend to show off or to oppose the truth, then our wealth becomes a witness against us. Let this verse be a gentle reminder: true success lies not in how much we spend, but in how sincerely we spend for the sake of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The son of Adam says, 'My wealth, my wealth!' — but do you own anything except what you eat and consume, what you wear and wear out, and what you give in charity and thus preserve?" So let us turn our boasting into humility, and our spending into investment for the Hereafter, where the only lasting treasure is that which is given for the pleasure of the Most Merciful.
