Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nafs (نَفْسٍ): The soul or self — the essence of a human being that distinguishes them from all other creations.
  • Mā sawwāhā (مَا سَوَّاهَا): "And what perfected it" or "and Him who proportioned it" — referring to Allah’s act of creating the soul in perfect balance, order, and completeness.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the human soul and by His perfect fashioning of it. The word "nafs" here is mentioned in an indefinite form to indicate its vastness and multiplicity — meaning every soul, from the first to the last, across all times and places. Allah swears by the soul and by His act of giving it a perfect, balanced, and complete form — free from any deficiency or disproportion. He created it with innate capabilities, instincts, and a natural disposition (fitrah) that is inclined toward goodness and truth.

This divine oath draws our attention to the incredible masterpiece that is the human soul — a creation so intricate and refined that it deserves to be sworn upon by the Lord of the Worlds. Just as the sun, the moon, the day, the night, the sky, and the earth were mentioned in the preceding verses as signs of Allah’s power and wisdom, the human soul stands as one of the greatest testimonies to His creative genius. The soul is not merely a physical entity; it carries within it the capacity for knowledge, morality, choice, and spiritual elevation.

The verse emphasizes that Allah perfected the soul — meaning He created it with the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, to choose its path, and to be held accountable for its actions. This perfection includes the soul’s natural inclination toward recognizing its Creator, its innate sense of justice, and its ability to grow and develop through faith and righteous deeds.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this magnificent oath. Allah is drawing your attention to the very essence of your being — your soul. If you look within yourself, you will find a creation of perfect balance and purpose. Your soul was not created in vain; it was fashioned with the ability to know its Lord, to love goodness, and to strive for excellence. This is a divine invitation to recognize your own value and potential. You are not a random accident — you are a deliberate, perfected creation of the Most Merciful. When you realize this, you will understand that your soul deserves to be nurtured with faith, purified through worship, and elevated through obedience to Allah. The very fact that Allah swears by your soul shows how precious you are in His sight. So do not neglect this precious gift — turn to your Creator, purify your soul with sincere repentance, and let it shine with the light of faith. Your soul is your ticket to eternal success — cherish it, protect it, and guide it toward what pleases your Lord.
