- Rahmah (رَحْمَةً): Ease, relief, and prosperity — such as rain, fertility, and well-being.
- Darraa' (ضَرَّاءَ): Hardship, adversity, and distress — such as drought, poverty, or affliction.
- Makr (مَكْرًا): Scheming, cunning deception, and plotting — here referring to their mockery and rejection of Allah's signs.
- Rusuluna (رُسُلُنَا): Our messengers — meaning the angelic scribes appointed to record every deed.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah draws our attention to a recurring human weakness: when people face hardship, they turn to their Lord in humility and desperation, but the moment He lifts the difficulty and grants them relief, they forget His favor and instead engage in mockery and denial of His signs. This is the nature of the disbelievers described here — when they taste mercy after suffering, they immediately resort to plotting against Allah's revelations, ridiculing them, and devising arguments to reject the truth.
Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ to respond to such people: "Say: Allah is swifter in scheming." This is a powerful declaration that while they may plot and scheme, Allah's response is far quicker and more decisive. His "scheming" here refers to His gradual punishment and gentle seizing of the arrogant — He gives them respite, but His hold is firm and inescapable. They may think their plots are hidden, but nothing escapes His knowledge.
The verse concludes with a sobering reminder: "Indeed, Our messengers record whatever you scheme." The angelic scribes appointed by Allah are diligently writing down every single plot, every act of mockery, and every word of denial. Nothing is lost, nothing is forgotten. Every scheme is being documented, and on the Day of Judgment, it will all be presented before them as evidence.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity: gratitude in times of ease is as important as patience in times of hardship. When Allah tests us with difficulty, we turn to Him; but when He blesses us with relief, we must not become arrogant or ungrateful. Instead, we should recognize His mercy, thank Him sincerely, and remain steadfast upon His path.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect upon your own life. How often do you remember Allah in times of trouble, yet forget Him when ease comes? This verse invites you to a higher station of faith — to be one who remembers Allah in both prosperity and adversity, who sees His signs everywhere, and who responds to His blessings with gratitude and obedience. The angels are recording your deeds, and Allah is ever watchful. Let this awareness transform your heart, drawing you closer to your Creator with love, humility, and unwavering trust. For the one who turns to Allah sincerely, Allah turns to him with even greater mercy and grace.
