Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Baiyyinat" (بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ): Clear proofs, evident miracles, and unmistakable signs that demonstrate the truthfulness of the messengers.
  • "Natba'u" (نَطْبَعُ): We seal or stamp upon — a metaphor for the final locking of the heart against faith, as a consequence of persistent rejection.
  • "Al-Mu'tadeen" (الْمُعْتَدِينَ): Those who transgress the limits set by Allah, who persist in wrongdoing and defiance after the truth has been made clear to them.

Tafsir (Interpretation):

After the story of Prophet Nuh (Noah) — peace be upon him — and his people, Allah tells us that He sent, one after another, messengers to their respective nations: Hud to 'Ad, Salih to Thamud, Ibrahim, Lut, Shu'ayb, and others — peace be upon them all. Each messenger came to his people with dazzling miracles and undeniable proofs that testified to the truth of their call. These signs were not hidden or ambiguous; they were clear, visible, and compelling.

Yet, remarkably, those nations still refused to believe. They persisted in the very denial they had embraced before their messengers even arrived. Their hearts had already hardened through their earlier rejection of truth, and so when the messengers came with clarity, they found no opening in those sealed hearts. It was not that the truth was unclear to them — it was that they had chosen arrogance and stubbornness, and that choice closed the door to guidance.

This is the divine law: when a person or a people repeatedly reject the truth after it has been made evident to them, their hearts become sealed. Just as Allah sealed the hearts of those past nations, so too does He seal the hearts of every transgressor in every time and place — those who overstep Allah's boundaries, who persist in sin and defiance, and who turn away from the call of their messengers. This sealing is not an injustice from Allah; rather, it is the natural and just consequence of their own persistent choice to reject what they knew to be true.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. The heart is like a vessel — if you fill it with humility, sincerity, and a love for truth, it becomes receptive to guidance. But if you fill it with arrogance, stubbornness, and a habit of rejecting what your conscience knows to be right, that vessel gradually hardens until no light can enter it.

The messengers of Allah — from Nuh to Muhammad, peace be upon them all — came with nothing but good for humanity. They called people to worship the One True God, to purify their souls, to establish justice, and to attain eternal happiness. Their proofs were clear, their character was impeccable, and their message was consistent. Yet some refused, not because of any deficiency in the message, but because of the corruption within their own hearts.

Today, the greatest messenger — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — has left us with the Qur'an, the final and most profound miracle. Its verses call us to the same truth that all prophets brought. Do not let your heart be among those that are sealed. Open it to the light of faith while there is still time. Respond to the call of your Lord with humility and sincerity, and you will find peace in this life and eternal success in the next.

The choice is yours — and the time is now.

📜 Verse 72-76 — Yunus

And if you turn away [from my advice] then no payment have I asked of you. My reward is only from Allah, and I have been commanded to be of the Muslims."
And they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship and made them successors, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. Then see how was the end of those who were warned.
Then We sent after him messengers to their peoples, and they came to them with clear proofs. But they were not to believe in that which they had denied before. Thus We seal over the hearts of the transgressors
Then We sent after them Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his establishment with Our signs, but they behaved arrogantly and were a criminal people
So when there came to them the truth from Us, they said, "Indeed, this is obvious magic."
