Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Wa innahu – "And indeed he" refers to mankind (the human being).
- ʿAlā dhālika – "Upon that" refers to the ingratitude and denial of Allah's blessings mentioned in the preceding verse.
- La-shahīd – "Is surely a witness" – meaning the person bears witness against himself, either through his own admission or through his actions that clearly testify to his nature.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse confirms and reinforces what was stated just before it: that the human being is, by his very nature, ungrateful to his Lord for the countless blessings bestowed upon him. Here, Allah declares that this same person is himself a witness to this reality. He cannot deny it, nor can he hide from it, because the evidence is overwhelming and undeniable.
The human being testifies against himself in multiple ways. His own tongue may admit his ingratitude when he complains about his circumstances despite having much. His actions bear witness when he withholds good from others, refuses to share what Allah has given him, or turns away from the commands of his Creator. Even his very being – his restlessness in times of ease and his despair in times of hardship – stands as a silent witness to his ungrateful nature.
This self-witness is a profound truth. No one needs to inform a person of his own ingratitude; he knows it deep within himself. When he reflects honestly, he recognizes that he has been blessed abundantly yet has failed to respond with gratitude. He knows that he has been given health, wealth, family, and countless other favors, yet his heart remains attached to worldly gains rather than to the Giver of all good.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to pause and look within yourself. Have you ever caught yourself complaining about what you lack while ignoring the countless blessings you possess? Have you ever withheld kindness or charity when you had the means to give? Have you ever felt that your wealth, your status, or your achievements were solely the result of your own effort, forgetting the One who provided every means for your success?
This verse is not meant to condemn you, but to awaken you. It is a gentle yet firm reminder that your own heart knows the truth. You are a witness against yourself. So why not turn that witness into a testimony of faith? Why not let your awareness of your own shortcomings lead you to the One who forgives, the One who is Most Merciful, the One who loves to forgive and loves those who turn back to Him?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that every child is born upon natural faith, and it is the environment that shapes him. Your nature may incline toward forgetfulness and ingratitude, but your fitrah (innate disposition) also knows the truth of your Lord. Listen to that inner voice. Let it guide you to gratitude, to generosity, to humility before your Creator.
Allah does not need your gratitude for His own benefit; He is Self-Sufficient, Free of all needs. Rather, gratitude is a key that opens the doors of more blessings. When you thank Allah, He increases you. When you acknowledge your shortcomings and seek His forgiveness, He draws closer to you. When you give from what He has given you, He multiplies your provision and purifies your heart.
So, my dear brother and sister in humanity, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. Look into it honestly. Then take the beautiful step of turning to Allah with a sincere heart, saying: "My Lord, I bear witness against my own shortcomings, but I also bear witness that You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. Forgive me, guide me, and help me to be among those who are truly grateful." Indeed, Allah is near, He hears, and He answers.
