Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Khayr (الْخَيْرِ): Here, it refers to wealth and material possessions.
  • La-Shadid (لَشَدِيدٌ): Intense, vehement, or extreme in degree.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse continues the description of the human condition, revealing another profound flaw in the character of the ungrateful person. After mentioning that man is ungrateful to his Lord and admits this ingratitude within himself, Allah now exposes his intense attachment to worldly wealth.

The verse states: *"And indeed, he is intense in his love for wealth."* The word "al-khayr" (the good) in this context refers to wealth and material abundance. The human being is described as having a fierce, overwhelming love for money and possessions — a love that is deeply rooted and powerful. This love is not merely a casual preference; it is an intense, consuming passion that often drives him to greed, stinginess, and hoarding.

This intense love for wealth manifests in several ways: he becomes miserly and reluctant to spend in the cause of Allah or to help those in need. He fears poverty and clings tightly to what he has, prioritizing his material desires over his spiritual obligations. This love can even lead him to acquire wealth through unlawful means, or to neglect his duties toward Allah and His creation.

The verse serves as a mirror for self-reflection. Every human being should examine their own heart: Is my love for wealth greater than my love for Allah? Do I spend generously for the sake of my Creator, or do I hold back out of fear of losing what I have? The true believer recognizes that wealth is merely a trust from Allah, a means to be used for good, not an end in itself.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to purify your heart. The love of wealth, when it dominates the soul, is a veil that blocks the light of faith. But when you place your trust in Allah and spend from what He has given you, your wealth becomes a source of blessing and barakah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *"The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, and in both there is good. Be keen on what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be helpless."* (Sahih Muslim)

So, let this verse be a reminder: your true treasure is not in your bank account, but in your heart's connection to Allah. Spend generously, give in charity, and you will find that Allah multiplies your provisions and grants you contentment. The one who is generous for the sake of Allah never loses; rather, he gains the love of His Lord and the peace of a purified soul.
