Word Meanings:

  • Aṭʿamahum – He fed them, provided them with sustenance.
  • Min jūʿ – From hunger; i.e., from severe, debilitating hunger and famine.
  • Āmanahum – He gave them security, made them safe.
  • Min khawf – From fear; i.e., from terror, danger, or threats to their lives and property.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse completes the description of the favors bestowed by the Lord of the Kaʿbah upon the tribe of Quraysh. After mentioning that He provided them with the journey of winter to Yemen and summer to Syria for trade, Allah now highlights two specific, life-saving blessings.

First: He fed them from hunger. The Quraysh lived in the barren valley of Makkah, a land with no agriculture, no rivers, and no means of producing food. Their survival depended entirely on Allah’s grace through the trade caravans He facilitated. Without His provision, they would have perished from starvation and drought. This was not a small favor—it was the very preservation of their lives.

Second: He gave them security from fear. The Arabs of that time lived in a state of constant tribal warfare, raids, and bloodshed. Yet, the Quraysh were held in high esteem by all tribes because they were the custodians of the Sacred House (the Kaʿbah). Their status as the people of the sanctuary meant that no one dared to attack them or their caravans, and even in times of widespread conflict, they remained safe. While others lived in fear, they enjoyed peace and protection—a privilege that came not from their own power, but from Allah’s decree.

This verse reminds us that both sustenance and security are gifts from Allah alone. The Quraysh did not earn these blessings through their wealth or numbers, but through the honor Allah granted them as guardians of His sacred sanctuary. Yet, despite all this, they were called to worship Him alone—the One who provided for them and protected them—rather than the idols they had set up as partners with Him.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

How often do we pause to recognize the blessings of a full stomach and a peaceful night’s sleep? Millions around the world go hungry and live in constant terror, while we enjoy safety and provision without even noticing. This verse invites us to open our eyes, to thank the One who grants us these gifts, and to turn to Him in sincere worship. If the Quraysh were obligated to thank Allah for their food and security, how much more are we—who have been given so much more—obligated to acknowledge His mercy? Let us make gratitude a habit, and let our hearts be filled with love for the Provider and Protector, who never leaves His servants without care. Islam is not merely a set of rituals; it is a life of awareness, gratitude, and devotion to the One who deserves all praise.
