Key Words and Phrases:
- Jādaltanā (جادلتنا): You argued with us, disputed with us, or engaged in debate with us.
- Aktharta jidālanā (أكثرت جدالنا): You have multiplied your arguments; you have prolonged and intensified your disputation with us.
- Fa'tinā bimā ta'idunā (فأتنا بما تعدنا): So bring upon us what you promise us — referring to the punishment and divine retribution that Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) had warned them about.
- In kunta mina al-ṣādiqīn (إن كنت من الصادقين): If you are indeed among the truthful in your claim and your message.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) had called his people to the worship of Allah alone for a very long time — patiently enduring their rejection, mockery, and stubbornness — and after he had presented to them every possible proof and argument, his people responded not with reflection or humility, but with arrogance and defiance. They said to him: "O Nūḥ, you have argued with us and disputed with us at great length, and you have exhausted us with your repeated reminders and warnings. Enough is enough! If you are truly truthful in what you claim — that Allah will send down punishment upon us for our disbelief — then bring that punishment upon us now! Let us see it with our own eyes."
This was not a sincere request for guidance or a genuine inquiry; rather, it was a challenge born of stubbornness and mockery. They were saying, in effect: "Stop talking and show us the punishment you keep warning us about!" They spoke this way out of arrogance and a complete dismissal of the truth, as if they were daring Allah's promise to come to pass. Their words reflected a heart hardened against faith and a mind closed to reason. They had reached a point where no amount of preaching or argument would benefit them, for they had sealed their own fate through their persistent rejection of the clear signs and messages brought to them by their noble prophet.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of those who reject the truth. When a person is not willing to accept guidance, they may resort to mockery and unreasonable demands — asking for miracles or punishments as a way to avoid submitting to the truth. But the believer's response, like that of Nūḥ (peace be upon him), is to remain patient, steadfast, and trust in Allah's perfect timing. The Qur'an repeatedly shows us that the prophets never wavered in their mission, even when faced with the most hostile reactions. This is a reminder for every Muslim to remain firm in calling others to goodness with wisdom and beautiful preaching, while leaving the outcome entirely to Allah. No matter how people respond, our duty is to convey the message with sincerity and patience, knowing that Allah is the Best of Judges and His promise is always true. The story of Nūḥ also comforts the believers: if the greatest of prophets faced such harsh rejection, then we should not be disheartened when we face opposition in our own efforts to spread goodness. Our reward lies with Allah, and His help is near for those who remain patient and steadfast.
