Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Quwwah" (قُوَّة): Strength, power, or the means to resist and defend—whether through physical might, supporters, or allies.
  • "Āwī" (آوِي): To seek refuge, to turn to, or to lean upon for protection and support.
  • "Ruknin Shadīd" (رُكْنٍ شَدِيد): A firm pillar or strong support—referring to a powerful clan, tribe, or group of people who could provide protection and defense.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) saw that his people were determined to commit the abominable act against his guests—the angels who came in human form—and that they had completely rejected his sincere advice and warnings, he expressed his deep frustration and helplessness. He said: *"If only I had the strength to overpower you, or a strong support to which I could turn, I would have certainly prevented you from this evil deed."*

This statement reveals the profound moral courage of Prophet Lot, who, despite being alone and weak in numbers, stood firmly against the wickedness of his people. He wished he had the physical power or the backing of a mighty tribe to defend his guests and uphold justice. His words reflect the natural human desire to protect the innocent and to stand against oppression, even when one is outnumbered and vulnerable. It also shows that resistance to evil is not limited to physical strength—sometimes, the greatest victory lies in speaking the truth and refusing to compromise, no matter the cost.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse teaches us a timeless lesson about the value of courage, integrity, and the defense of honor. Prophet Lot's longing for strength was not for personal gain or revenge, but for the noble purpose of protecting the weak and stopping immorality. As believers, we are reminded that true strength lies not only in numbers or power, but in the firmness of our faith and our commitment to what is right. Even when we feel alone, we must never abandon the truth. And when we lack the means to change an evil, we must at least speak against it with our hearts and tongues, and trust that Allah, the Most Powerful, is always with those who strive for righteousness. Let us also be grateful for the communities and families that support us in goodness, and strive to be a "strong pillar" for others who are in need of protection and guidance.

📜 Verse 78-82 — Hud

They said, "You have already known that we have not concerning your daughters any claim, and indeed, you know what we want."
80قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِي بِكُمْ قُوَّةً أَوْ آوِي إِلَىٰ رُكْنٍ شَدِيدٍ

The angels said, "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; [therefore], they will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back - except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is [for] the morning. Is not the morning near?"
