Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • اسْتَيْأَسُوا (istay'asū): They despaired and lost all hope.
  • خَلَصُوا نَجِيًّا (khalasū najiyyan): They withdrew privately, away from people, to consult one another in secret.
  • كَبِيرُهُمْ (kabīruhum): Their eldest brother (in age), who was Reuben (or Judah, according to some narrations).
  • مَوْثِقًا (mawthiqan): A firm, binding covenant or pledge.
  • فَرَّطْتُمْ (farraṭtum): You neglected, fell short, or failed in your duty.
  • فَلَنْ أَبْرَحَ (falan abraḥa): I will not leave or depart from this land.
  • يَحْكُمَ اللَّهُ لِي (yaḥkuma Allāhu lī): Allah judges/decides in my favor.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph) realized that their repeated pleas and negotiations had failed, and that the Aziz of Egypt (who was Yusuf himself, though they did not recognize him) would not release their younger brother Binyamin to them, they lost all hope of persuading him through ordinary means. At that moment, they withdrew from the crowd and gathered in a private, secluded place to consult one another in earnest, away from all ears, speaking in hushed tones about what to do next.

It was then that their eldest brother — the one who carried the weight of responsibility and who had learned from past mistakes — stood before them and addressed them with a stern reminder. He said: "Have you forgotten that our father took from you a solemn, binding covenant in the name of Allah? You swore to him, before Allah Himself, that you would return his youngest son to him safely, unless you were utterly overpowered and had no means to do so. And before this very incident, you had already failed Yusuf — you neglected him, betrayed your father's trust, and caused him years of grief. You cannot afford to repeat that same failure again."

Then, with firm resolve, he declared: "I will not leave this land of Egypt — I will not move from this place — until my father grants me permission to return to him, or until Allah Himself judges in my favor and grants me the means to bring my brother back. And Allah is the Best of Judges, the Most Just in His decisions, and I place my trust entirely in His wisdom."

This statement reflects a profound transformation — a man who had once been complicit in injustice now stood as a pillar of integrity, patience, and reliance upon Allah. He chose to remain in a foreign land, separated from his family, rather than return to his father with a broken promise and a heavy conscience. He understood that true honor lies not in escaping hardship, but in fulfilling one's obligations and trusting in Allah's perfect judgment.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: the importance of honoring promises and covenants, especially those made in the name of Allah. The eldest brother's stance teaches us that when we have erred in the past, the path to redemption is not through further negligence, but through steadfastness, patience, and a sincere commitment to set things right. He did not make excuses or shift blame — he took responsibility and chose to remain in a difficult situation rather than abandon his duty.

How often do we, in our own lives, find ourselves tempted to take the easy way out — to break a promise, to neglect a responsibility, or to flee from a difficult situation? This verse calls us to a higher standard: to be people of integrity who stand by their word, who place their trust in Allah's judgment, and who are willing to endure hardship for the sake of what is right. Allah is the Best of Judges — He sees every struggle, honors every sincere effort, and never lets a good deed go to waste. Let us, like this noble brother, choose the path of patience and trust, knowing that Allah's decision is always the best.

📜 Verse 78-82 — Yusuf

They said, "O 'Azeez, indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good."
He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allah [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust."
So when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allah and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allah decides for me, and He is the best of judges.
Return to your father and say, "O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen,
And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful,"
