Tafsir (Explanation):
After the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph) had brought their younger brother Binyamin (Benjamin) to Egypt, Yusuf devised a plan to keep his brother with him. He had the royal cup (the king’s drinking vessel) placed secretly in Binyamin’s saddlebag, and then had it announced that a thief had stolen the king’s cup. When the brothers were searched, the cup was found in Binyamin’s bag, and he was detained as a punishment for the alleged theft.
When the brothers returned to their eldest brother (or, as some scholars say, Yusuf himself advised them), he said to them: “Return to your father, and say: O our father, indeed your son has stolen.” This was a painful message to deliver, but they had to face the reality and inform their aging father Ya‘qub (Jacob) of what had happened.
They were to add: “And we did not testify except to what we knew.” Meaning: We only bore witness to what we saw with our own eyes — we saw the king’s cup being brought out from his bag. We did not fabricate this or accuse him falsely; we merely reported the evidence that was presented to us.
Then they said: “And we were not keepers of the unseen.” This is a humble admission: We did not know what was hidden from us. We had no knowledge that Binyamin would steal before we brought him, nor could we have foreseen this outcome. We gave you our promise to protect him, but we cannot guard against what is beyond our knowledge and control. We are not all-knowing; only Allah knows the unseen.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about honesty, humility, and the limits of human knowledge. The brothers admitted their inability to foresee the future, acknowledging that human beings can only act upon what is apparent and known, while the unseen belongs solely to Allah. It also shows the importance of being truthful with one’s parents and loved ones, even when the truth is difficult to deliver.
Dear reader, reflect on how these noble prophets and their families dealt with trials — with patience, honesty, and submission to Allah’s decree. When you face difficulties in your own life, remember that Allah is the Knower of the unseen, and He alone can turn hardship into ease. Trust in Him, speak the truth, and never despair of His mercy. For indeed, after every difficulty comes relief, and Allah’s plan is always beautiful for those who believe.
