Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "الْقَرْيَةَ" (the town/city): Here it refers to the people of the city, specifically Egypt (Misr). In Arabic usage, asking "the town" means asking its inhabitants.
- "الْعِيرَ" (the caravan): The caravan of travelers and their mounts (camels) that accompanied them on their journey back. The meaning here is the people of that caravan.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, the brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) are speaking to their father, Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon them both. They had returned home without Yusuf, claiming that a wolf had devoured him, and they brought his shirt stained with false blood as "evidence." Now, to further convince their father of their truthfulness, they instruct him: "Ask the town where we were" — meaning, send someone to inquire among the people of Egypt who witnessed the events — "and ask the caravan in which we returned" — that is, the fellow travelers who accompanied them on the journey back to Canaan. These people, they claim, can verify the story of Yusuf being taken by the wolf.
The verse beautifully illustrates the brothers' attempt to strengthen their case by appealing to external witnesses. However, the deeper lesson for us is profound: truth does not need excessive proof or elaborate justifications. A sincere heart, clear conscience, and honest words are the greatest witnesses. The brothers tried to build a fortress of lies with the bricks of false testimonies, but Allah's truth prevailed, and the deception was eventually exposed. This teaches us that no matter how convincing falsehood may appear, it is fragile and temporary, while truth, even if delayed, always shines through.
Da'wah Reflection:
O beloved reader, reflect on the beauty of this Qur'anic narrative. It is not merely a historical story but a living lesson for every soul. When you speak, let your words be truthful, for Allah knows what is in your heart, and He is the Best of Judges. The brothers of Yusuf thought they could deceive their father, but they could not deceive Allah. In your daily life, remember that honesty is a fortress that protects your honor and brings peace to your heart. Islam calls you to be a person of integrity — one whose words match their actions, and whose actions are guided by the light of faith. The Qur'an invites you to a life of purity and sincerity, where you stand firm in truth even when falsehood surrounds you. And know that Allah, the All-Seeing, is always with those who are truthful, guiding them through every trial and rewarding them with His mercy and love.
