Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آثَرَكَ (Atharaka): Preferred you, honored you, and distinguished you above us.
- لَخَاطِئِينَ (La-khati'in): Those who erred deliberately and committed a sin knowingly — as opposed to merely making an unintentional mistake.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Yusuf (Joseph) revealed his true identity to his brothers and forgave them with the noble words, "No blame will there be upon you today," their hearts melted with shame and regret. Overwhelmed by his magnanimity and the weight of their past betrayal, they confessed, swearing by Allah: "By Allah, indeed Allah has preferred you over us."
They acknowledged that Yusuf's elevation was not a stroke of luck or coincidence — it was a divine choice. Allah had granted him qualities they lacked: patience through years of suffering, forbearance in the face of injustice, wisdom in managing a nation's affairs, and a forgiving heart that rose above revenge. His character radiated a nobility that could only come from Allah's special favor.
And then came the painful admission: "And indeed, we were certainly sinners." They did not try to justify their actions or minimize their guilt. They admitted that what they did to him — throwing him into the well, selling him as a slave, and lying to their father — was a deliberate, knowing transgression. The word they used (khati'un) indicates intentional wrongdoing, not a mere slip or oversight.
This confession was the beginning of their healing. True repentance requires acknowledging one's fault without excuses, and they did exactly that. Their humility opened the door to forgiveness, and Yusuf's response — "No blame upon you today; Allah will forgive you" — completed the cycle of mercy.
A Call to Reflection:
This scene teaches us a profound lesson: no matter how deep our mistakes, sincere acknowledgment and repentance can restore what was broken. The brothers spent years living with guilt, but the moment they confessed and humbled themselves, Allah's mercy flowed through Yusuf's forgiveness.
How beautiful is the religion that teaches us to forgive those who wronged us, and to admit our faults without arrogance! Islam does not ask us to be perfect — it asks us to be sincere. When we fall, we rise by acknowledging our error, seeking Allah's pardon, and making amends. And when others seek our forgiveness, we remember that Allah loves those who pardon people, and that forgiving others is a path to our own forgiveness.
Let this verse inspire you: if the brothers of Yusuf — who committed such a grave injustice — could be forgiven and elevated through their honest repentance, then no sin is too great for Allah's mercy when accompanied by true regret and a resolve to change. Turn to your Lord today, confess your shortcomings to Him, and trust that His mercy encompasses all things. And be quick to forgive others, for in doing so, you open the gates of divine forgiveness for yourself.
