Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لَا تَثْرِيبَ (lā tathrība): No reproach, no blame, no reprimand, and no punishment for what has passed.
- الْيَوْمَ (al-yawma): This day, meaning from this moment onward.
- يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ (yaghfiru Allāhu lakum): May Allah forgive you — a sincere supplication (duʿā’) from Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him) for his brothers.
- أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ (arḥamu ar-rāḥimīn): The Most Merciful of all who show mercy — an attribute exclusive to Allah, whose mercy surpasses that of any parent, prophet, or creation.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After years of separation, hardship, and the painful memory of being thrown into a well by his own brothers, Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him) stood before them — not as a vengeful ruler, but as a noble prophet and a forgiving brother. When his brothers finally acknowledged their wrongdoing and expressed deep regret, Yusuf’s response became an eternal lesson in mercy and magnanimity.
He said: "No reproach upon you today." He did not list their sins, nor did he remind them of their cruelty. He did not say, "You sold me," or "You lied to our father," or "You left me in the dark pit." Instead, he closed the file of the past completely. The word *tathrīb* means harsh blame that leaves a scar on the soul; Yusuf removed every trace of it. He even added "today" — meaning, not only do I forgive you now, but I will never bring up this matter again in the future.
Then, he elevated his forgiveness to the level of a beautiful supplication: "May Allah forgive you." He did not stop at his own pardon — he asked the Creator of the heavens and the earth to forgive them as well. This is the hallmark of true nobility: when you forgive someone, you also pray for their spiritual well-being. Yusuf understood that his brothers’ sin was ultimately against Allah, and so he turned their case to the Most Merciful Judge.
He concluded with the profound statement: "And He is the Most Merciful of the merciful." This is not just a description — it is a declaration of hope. Even after such a grave betrayal, the door of Allah’s mercy remains wide open for those who repent sincerely. Yusuf was teaching his brothers — and all of humanity — that no sin is too great for Allah’s forgiveness, provided one turns back to Him in truth.
This verse carries a powerful message for every Muslim: forgiveness is a sign of strength, not weakness. When you forgive others for the sake of Allah, you are following the footsteps of the prophets. And when you ask Allah to forgive those who wronged you, you are planting seeds of love and harmony that can heal even the deepest wounds.
Dear reader, reflect on this scene: the one who was wronged is now the one who prays for the wrongdoers. This is the beauty of Islam — it transforms hearts, elevates souls, and teaches us that mercy is the highest rank a human being can attain. Let this verse inspire you to forgive those who have hurt you, to pray for them, and to trust that Allah — the Most Merciful of the merciful — will reward your patience with His infinite grace.
