Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ghayb (الْغَيْبِ): That which is hidden from the senses and perception of created beings—the unseen, the concealed, the unknown to creation.
  • Ash-Shahādah (الشَّهَادَةِ): That which is witnessed and perceived—the seen, the observable, the manifest to the senses.
  • Al-Kabīr (الْكَبِيرُ): The Great, the Supreme in essence, attributes, and actions—the One beside Whom everything else is small and insignificant.
  • Al-Mutaʿāl (الْمُتَعَالِ): The Most High, the Exalted—the One Who rises far above all creation and above any imperfection or likeness to His creatures.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this majestic verse, Allah describes Himself with four profound attributes that establish His absolute perfection and total sovereignty over all that exists.

First: "ʿĀlimu al-Ghayb" (Knower of the Unseen) — Allah alone possesses complete and perfect knowledge of everything that is hidden from His creation. He knows the secrets of the hearts, the mysteries of the heavens and the earth, what lies in the depths of the oceans, what will happen tomorrow, and what occurred before time began. Nothing escapes His knowledge—not even the falling of a leaf, nor the whisper of a soul to itself.

Second: "wa ash-Shahādah" (and the Witnessed) — He also knows everything that is visible and observable to His creatures. The seen and the unseen are equally clear to Him; neither requires any effort or distinction. What you do openly, what you say publicly, every movement you make in the sight of others—all of it is fully known to Him. His knowledge encompasses both realms perfectly, without any limitation.

Third: "Al-Kabīr" (The Great) — He is the Greatest in His essence, His names, and His attributes. His greatness is absolute and unmatched. Everything in existence—the vast galaxies, the mighty oceans, the towering mountains, the powerful kings—all are utterly small and insignificant before His majesty. His greatness is not relative or comparative; it is intrinsic and infinite.

Fourth: "Al-Mutaʿāl" (The Most High) — He is exalted above all His creation in His essence, His power, and His dominion. He is far above any resemblance to His creatures, far above any imperfection, weakness, or deficiency. He is elevated above the false claims of the polytheists and above any description that falls short of His true majesty. His loftiness is absolute—in His nature, His attributes, and His authority.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, contemplate this verse deeply. The One who knows your every secret and your every open action is the same One who is Great beyond measure and Exalted above all things. This means that nothing in your life—no matter how hidden or private—escapes His awareness. He sees your struggles, knows your intentions, and witnesses your deeds.

What comfort this brings to the believer! When you feel alone, remember that the All-Knowing sees you. When you face injustice, remember that the Most High is aware and His justice will prevail. When you feel small and lost, remember that you are connected to the Greatest of all beings through your faith and worship.

And what a warning this holds for those who sin in secret! They may hide from people, but they cannot hide from the One who knows the unseen and the witnessed. No darkness conceals from Him, no secrecy protects from Him.

So turn to Him with sincerity, for He knows the purity of your heart. Seek His guidance, for He knows what is best for you. And place your trust in Him, for He is the Great, the Most High—and nothing is beyond His power. This is the essence of true faith: to know that you are always in the presence of the All-Knowing, the All-Great, and to live your life accordingly—with hope, with reverence, and with love for the One who encompasses everything in His knowledge and majesty.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Ar-Ra'd

And those who disbelieved say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" You are only a warner, and for every people is a guide.
Allah knows what every female carries and what the wombs lose [prematurely] or exceed. And everything with Him is by due measure.
[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted.
It is the same [to Him] concerning you whether one conceals [his] speech or one publicizes it and whether one is hidden by night or conspicuous [among others] by day.
For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.
