Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَوَكَّل (Tawakkul): To place one's trust, reliance, and full dependence upon Allah while taking the necessary means.
- هَدَانَا سُبُلَنَا (Hadana Subulana): He has guided us to our paths — meaning He has shown us the clear ways of guidance, salvation, and righteousness.
- آذَيْتُمُونَا (Adhaytumuna): The harm and hurt you have inflicted upon us, whether through words, actions, or ridicule.
Explanation of the Verse:
The believers, in their dialogue with their disbelieving people, pose a powerful rhetorical question: *"And why should we not rely upon Allah when He has guided us to our paths?"* This is not a question of uncertainty but one of affirmation — it means: What possible excuse or obstacle could prevent us from placing our complete trust in Allah? He has already bestowed upon us the greatest blessing: guidance to the straight path, the path of salvation from His punishment, and the clarity of His religion. When Allah has illuminated the way for you, what room remains for doubt or for placing reliance on anything other than Him?
Then they declare their firm resolve: *"And we will surely be patient against whatever harm you inflict upon us."* This is a solemn oath and a commitment to endure the persecution, mockery, and hurtful words of their opponents without wavering in their faith. Their patience is not born of weakness but of strength — a certainty that their Lord is with them and that their reward is with Him.
The verse concludes with a universal principle: *"And upon Allah let the reliant ones rely."* This is both a declaration and an invitation — those who truly trust, those who are sincere in their faith, place their complete reliance upon Allah alone. They do not depend on human power, numbers, or material means, but on the One who controls all affairs. This is the hallmark of true believers: in times of ease and hardship, in victory and adversity, their hearts are anchored in Allah.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless message for every Muslim. When you have been guided by Allah to the truth, what is there to fear? The world may oppose you, people may harm you with their words or actions, but your trust in Allah transforms that hardship into a source of strength and reward. The believers in this verse model for us the perfect response to hostility: not retaliation, not despair, but patience rooted in tawakkul. And Allah promises that those who rely on Him will never be abandoned. So let your heart be at peace — for the One who guided you to His path will never leave you to face the trials of that path alone. Trust Him, be patient, and watch how He turns your trials into triumphs. This is the beauty of Islam: it gives you a certainty that no worldly power can shake.
