- مُقْنِعِي رُءُوسِهِمْ (Muqniʿī Ruʾūsihim): Raising their heads upward, lifting them in terror and distress.

- وَأَفْئِدَتُهُمْ هَوَاءٌ (Wa Afʾidatuhum Hawāʾ): Their hearts are empty and hollow—void of reason, comprehension, or any calm, due to overwhelming terror.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse paints a vivid and terrifying scene from the Day of Resurrection, when the wrongdoers rise from their graves. They rush frantically toward the caller—the angel of resurrection—driven by fear and panic, not by choice or willingness. Their heads are raised upward, their eyes fixed and unblinking, staring in horror at the sky, unable to see anything clearly because of the sheer magnitude of the terror surrounding them. Their gaze does not return to them; they cannot blink, look down, or turn away, as their vision is locked in a state of shock. As for their hearts, they are utterly empty—hollow like a vacuum, devoid of any thought, understanding, or feeling, except for the consuming dread that has emptied them of all else. The Arabic word "hawāʾ" (هواء) literally means air or emptiness, and it is used here to describe hearts that have become like empty vessels, stripped of reason and filled only with fear.
This is a scene of absolute helplessness and humiliation for those who rejected the truth in this worldly life. They who once walked with arrogance and pride, who dismissed the warnings of the prophets and mocked the promise of the Hereafter, will on that Day find themselves in a state of utter submission and terror, unable to control even their own gaze or thoughts.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and let this image settle in your heart. This is not a distant or abstract event—it is a certainty that awaits every soul. The Qurʾān presents this scene not to frighten us aimlessly, but to awaken us from the slumber of heedlessness. If we truly believed that one day we will stand in such a state, would we not rush instead to deeds of righteousness? Would we not hasten to seek forgiveness, to mend our relationships, to give charity, to pray, and to remember our Lord in every moment?
The same eyes that will be fixed in terror on that Day can today weep in humility before Allah in the depths of the night. The same hearts that will be emptied of all good can today be filled with the light of faith, the sweetness of remembrance, and the peace that comes from submission to the Creator. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us this life as a window of opportunity—a chance to turn back, to repent, and to prepare for a meeting that is inevitable.
Do not wait until that Day when it will be too late to return. Today, your heart is still beating, your eyes still see, and your mind still comprehends. Use these gifts to draw closer to Allah, to learn His religion, and to live a life that pleases Him. For on that Day, the only ones who will find peace and security are those who strove in this world to meet their Lord with a pure heart. Let this verse be a reminder that the Hereafter is real, and that every step we take in this life determines our standing in the next. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from the terror of that Day.
