Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Law ma (لَّوْ مَا): A phrase meaning "Why not" or "If only you would," used here as a challenge or demand.
- Ta'tina (تَأْتِينَا): "You bring to us" — implying a demand for a visible, tangible sign.
- Bil-mala'ikah (بِالْمَلَائِكَةِ): "With the angels" — the disbelievers demanded to see angels with their own eyes.
- In kunta mina al-sadiqin (إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ): "If you are among the truthful" — a conditional taunt, questioning the Prophet's honesty.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse captures the arrogant and mocking tone of the disbelievers of Makkah when they addressed the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They said, in a spirit of ridicule and defiance: "Why do you not bring angels to us, if you are truly truthful in your claim that you are a messenger of Allah?"
Their demand was not born out of sincere seeking of truth, but out of stubbornness and mockery. They knew that prophets are sent with miracles and signs, but they insisted on seeing angels physically — not merely as a sign, but as a way to dismiss and belittle the message. They said this while also accusing the Prophet of being insane or deluded, as mentioned in the preceding verses. Their logic was twisted: they demanded something that would prove the message, yet they had already made up their minds to reject it no matter what.
In their hearts, they did not really want guidance. They wanted to escape accountability. They thought that by demanding impossible or extraordinary signs, they could avoid the truth. But Allah, in His infinite wisdom, sent the Prophet with the greatest miracle of all — the Qur'an — a living, eternal sign that challenges humanity to produce anything like it. The angels do not come to every messenger at every demand; they come only by Allah's command, at the time He chooses, and for purposes He decrees.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on this: The disbelievers of old demanded angels, yet when the truth was placed before them in the form of the Qur'an — a book that has challenged the greatest minds of humanity for over 1,400 years — they still turned away. What sign would have satisfied them? If angels had descended, they would have said, "These are just men like us." Their problem was not a lack of signs; it was a sickness in their hearts.
Allah, in His mercy, did not leave humanity without proof. He sent the Qur'an — a miracle of language, wisdom, and guidance that speaks to every generation. It is a sign that is always present, always accessible, and always alive. The angels do descend, but they descend with Allah's mercy upon the believers, with the revelation of guidance, and at the appointed times of divine decree.
So, do not wait for angels to appear before you believe. Open your heart to the signs that are already around you — the heavens and the earth, the order of the universe, the miracle of your own existence, and the timeless words of the Qur'an. These are sufficient for those who truly seek the truth. And know that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was indeed truthful, and his message is the path to salvation in this life and the next.
