Key Words and Phrases:
- "الذِّكْر" (Adh-Dhikr): The Reminder — referring to the Qur'an, which serves as a reminder of Allah's commands, warnings, and guidance.
- "لَمَجْنُون" (la-majnūn): "Surely mad" or "possessed" — a mocking accusation used by the disbelievers to dismiss the Prophet's message.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelievers of Makkah, in their arrogance and mockery, addressed the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a taunting tone: "O you to whom the Reminder has been sent down!" They acknowledged — sarcastically — that he claimed to receive the Qur'an, yet they followed this by saying, "Indeed, you are surely mad!"
Their intent was not to genuinely inquire or seek truth, but to belittle and ridicule him. They argued that if he truly were a messenger of Allah, why did he not bring angels to confirm his prophethood? In their ignorance, they equated his call to monotheism and his rejection of their idols with insanity. They thought that anyone who would abandon the religion of his forefathers and challenge their established traditions must be out of his mind.
This accusation of madness was a common tactic used by the disbelievers against all the prophets before him — a desperate attempt to undermine the credibility of the divine message without engaging with its content. Yet, as the Qur'an repeatedly affirms, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most sound of mind and character, and the Qur'an itself stands as an eternal proof of his truthfulness.
A Call to Reflection:
How often do people dismiss the truth simply because it challenges their comfort zones? The disbelievers of Makkah had no rational argument against the Qur'an, so they resorted to name-calling and mockery. But the Qur'an, with its eloquence, wisdom, and profound guidance, remains untouched by such accusations. It continues to transform hearts and minds across centuries.
Dear reader, when you encounter the Qur'an, do not let prejudice or societal pressure blind you. Approach it with an open heart, and you will find that it is not the words of a madman, but the very speech of the Creator — a mercy and a light for all of humanity. The same Qur'an that they mocked is the book that has guided billions to peace, justice, and eternal success. Will you not reflect upon it?
