Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Iqra' (اقْرَأْ): "Read" or "Recite" — a direct command given to the soul on the Day of Judgment.
  • Kitābaka (كِتَابَكَ): "Your book" — the record of all one's deeds, both good and bad, written by the appointed angels.
  • Ḥasīban (حَسِيبًا): "An accountant" or "a reckoner" — one who takes full account of deeds, leaving nothing unexamined.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Judgment, when every soul stands before its Lord, it will be told: "Read your book — the record of your deeds." This is a command that carries both awe and mercy. Even for those who could not read in this worldly life, on that Day they will be able to read their own record with perfect clarity, for their very soul will recognize every action, every word, and every intention.

The verse then declares: "Sufficient is your own soul this Day as a reckoner against you." This is the ultimate act of divine justice and fairness. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, does not need to appoint a witness against you — your own self becomes the witness, the judge, and the evidence. Your deeds will speak, your limbs will testify, and your book will be laid open before you. You will be asked to account for yourself, and you will find that you cannot deny a single entry, for it is all written with perfect precision.

This is a profound mercy wrapped in a moment of truth. By making you the reckoner of your own soul, Allah silences every excuse and every plea of ignorance. You will see your life unfold before you — every prayer, every kindness, every sin, every moment of patience, and every moment of heedlessness. And in that moment, you will understand that Allah has never wronged anyone; rather, it is we who wrong our own souls.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear believer, this verse is not only about the Hereafter — it is a call to self-accountability in this very life. If you are honest with yourself today, you will not be surprised tomorrow. Take a moment each day to read the "book" of your own actions. Ask yourself: What have I done for my Lord? What have I done for His creation? What have I done that I would be ashamed to read aloud?

The One who gave you this command is the Most Merciful. He does not wish to humiliate you; He wishes to elevate you. By holding yourself to account now, you cleanse your soul, correct your path, and draw closer to Him. And on that Day, when your book is placed in your hand, you will find that every good deed has been preserved, every repentance has been accepted, and every act of sincerity has been rewarded beyond measure.

So read your book with hope, not fear — for the One who wrote it is the Most Just, and the One who asks you to read it is the Most Compassionate. And know that His mercy encompasses all things, and His forgiveness is greater than your sins.

📜 Verse 12-16 — Al-Isra

And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]. And everything We have set out in detail.
And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open.
[It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant."
Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.
And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction.
