Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-ʿĀjilah (العاجلة): The immediate, fleeting life of this world—its pleasures, wealth, and temporary comforts.
- ʿAjjalnā (عجّلنا): We hasten or expedite.
- Yaṣlāhā (يصلها): He will enter it and endure its heat—i.e., the Fire of Hell.
- Madhmūman (مذموماً): Blameworthy, deserving of censure.
- Madḥūran (مدحوراً): Driven away, expelled from Allah’s mercy, humiliated and rejected.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse draws a sharp contrast between two paths in life—one focused solely on the fleeting world, and the other on the eternal Hereafter. Allah tells us that whoever makes the immediate, perishable life of this world their sole ambition and ultimate goal—seeking only its pleasures, wealth, and status, without any belief in the Hereafter or preparation for it—then Allah, in His perfect wisdom and justice, grants such a person whatever He wills of worldly provisions. This is not a guarantee that they will get everything they desire; rather, it is subject to Allah’s will and decree. He gives to whom He wills, and withholds from whom He wills, based on what is written in the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ). Some may be given abundance, others scarcity, and still others may be tested through what they receive—but none of it is granted merely because they deserve it or because they asked for it; it is purely Allah’s choice.
However, the verse then delivers a sobering truth: after this brief enjoyment in the world, such a person will be cast into Hellfire on the Day of Judgment. They will enter it and taste its unbearable heat, while being blameworthy—for they chose the temporary over the eternal, and driven away—expelled from Allah’s mercy, humiliated and disgraced. Their worldly gains will not avail them, and their fleeting pleasures will turn into everlasting regret.
This verse is a profound reminder that the pursuit of this world at the expense of the Hereafter is a losing trade. The one who lives only for the immediate gratification of the dunya may achieve some of it, but at what cost? The Fire awaits them, and their end is blame and expulsion from divine mercy.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: what is your ultimate goal in life? If your heart is solely attached to the glitter of this world—its money, its status, its fleeting joys—then know that even if you attain all of it, it will not last. The world is like a shadow that vanishes, or a mirage that disappears when you reach it. But the Hereafter is eternal, and its rewards are everlasting.
Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left you without guidance. He has shown you the consequence of living for the dunya alone, so that you may choose the better path—the path of faith, righteousness, and preparation for the eternal life. The door of repentance is always open. Turn to Allah now, before the moment when regret will be of no avail. Seek the Hereafter, and Allah will grant you both the good of this world and the bliss of the next. As He says elsewhere: *“But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world”* (Al-Qaṣaṣ 28:77).
Do not be among those who trade an eternal paradise for a handful of dust. Choose wisely, for your choice today determines your destiny tomorrow.
