Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ḥijāban mastūran: A covering veil that is concealed and hidden from sight, acting as a barrier that prevents perception and understanding.
Explanation of the Verse:
When you, O Messenger, recite the Qur’an and the disbelievers who deny the Hereafter hear it, Allah places between you and them a hidden, concealing veil. This veil is not a physical barrier you can see, but rather a covering cast over their hearts and minds, preventing them from grasping the truth of the Qur’an and reflecting on its meanings. This occurs as a just consequence of their arrogance, stubborn rejection, and turning away from the signs of Allah. Their own disbelief becomes the very shield that blocks them from guidance, for when a servant persists in rejecting the truth, Allah seals his heart as a form of divine justice.
This verse also carries a profound reassurance for the believer: Allah protects His Messenger and His Book. Even when the disbelievers gather to harm or mock, Allah’s unseen protection surrounds the recitation of His words. The same Qur’an that guides the sincere is veiled from those who approach it with malice and denial.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the majesty of this verse! The Qur’an is a light that illuminates every heart that seeks it sincerely, yet it remains hidden from those who turn away in pride. This is both a warning and an invitation: do not let your heart become veiled from the Book of your Lord. Approach the Qur’an with humility, with a desire to understand, and with love for its message — and you will find its doors wide open, its meanings unfolding before you like the dawn breaking through the night. Allah does not turn away anyone who comes to Him with a pure heart; rather, He draws them closer with every verse they recite. Let this be your moment to open your heart to the Qur’an, for it is the rope of Allah that never breaks, the healing for what lies within your chest, and the guide to a life of peace in this world and eternal success in the Hereafter.
