Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- عَبْدًا (a servant): A righteous and devoted slave of Allah, singled out for His special favor.
- رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا (mercy from Us): A great blessing and divine favor granted by Allah, which included prophethood and profound compassion.
- مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا (knowledge from Our Own): Sacred, God-given knowledge that is not acquired through ordinary means but is bestowed directly by Allah, unveiling hidden realities.
The Interpretation:
In this verse, Allah tells us about the journey of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and his young companion. When they reached the place where the fish had slipped away—a sign from Allah—they found a special servant of Ours. This was Al-Khidr (peace be upon him), a prophet of Allah, who had been granted a unique mercy from His Lord: a combination of prophethood and deep compassion for creation. Moreover, Allah had taught him a special knowledge from His own presence—knowledge of unseen matters and divine wisdom that ordinary people, and even other prophets, do not possess. This was not knowledge gained through study or experience, but a direct gift from Allah, tailored for a mission that would unfold in the coming events.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a treasure of lessons for every believer. It shows us that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, distributes His favors as He wills. He gave Musa (peace be upon him) the knowledge of the Law and the Torah, and He gave Al-Khidr a hidden knowledge of divine secrets. Neither is superior to the other; rather, each serves a purpose in Allah's grand plan. This teaches us humility: no matter how much knowledge or virtue we possess, there is always someone who knows what we do not. It also fills our hearts with hope—if we sincerely seek Allah's mercy and strive in His path, He may open doors of knowledge and wisdom for us that we never imagined. The story invites us to trust Allah completely, for His choices are always full of wisdom, even when we cannot see it at first. Let this verse inspire you to seek knowledge with sincerity, to remain humble before the vastness of Allah's creation, and to believe that every believer, no matter how simple, can be a vessel for Allah's mercy and guidance.
