- Al-Ahzāb (الأحزاب): The factions or parties that split into different groups.
- Min baynihim (مِن بَيْنِهِمْ): From among them — meaning, from among the people of that nation.
- Wayl (وَيْل): A word of threatening and destruction — woe, calamity, or severe punishment.
- Mashhad (مَشْهَد): The scene, the witnessing, or the place of standing — referring to the Day of Resurrection when all creation will be present.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the story of Prophet Jesus (ʿĪsā, peace be upon him) was presented, Allah tells us that the people who came after him — primarily the Jews and Christians — fell into severe disagreement about his true nature. They split into opposing factions, each holding extreme and contradictory views. Some among the Christians went to extremes of exaggeration, claiming that Jesus was Allah Himself, or the son of Allah, or one of three gods — exalted is Allah far above what they say. Others among the Jews fell short of the truth and went to the opposite extreme, accusing him of being a sorcerer or an illegitimate child — far removed from the honor Allah bestowed upon him. Meanwhile, the true believers among them affirmed what Allah revealed: that Jesus was a noble servant, a Messenger of Allah, and His word cast upon Maryam, a spirit from Him — not a god, not a son, and not a fraud.
Then Allah issues a stern warning: "So woe to those who disbelieve from the scene of a Great Day." This is a terrifying threat directed at all who rejected the truth about Jesus and persisted in their disbelief. The "Great Day" is the Day of Resurrection — a day of immense horror and overwhelming events. On that day, every soul will stand before its Lord, and the disbelievers will witness with their own eyes the reality they once denied. They will see the heavens split, the stars fall, the mountains crumble, and every secret laid bare. There will be no intercessor to save them, no refuge to flee to, and no second chance to correct their beliefs. The very witnessing of that day will be a source of unbearable regret and anguish for them, let alone the punishment that follows.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder for all of humanity. The differences and divisions among people about the truth are not new — they have occurred throughout history with every prophet. But the ultimate consequence is certain: those who knowingly reject the truth and persist in disbelief will face a day of absolute justice. There is no escape from that reality.
So, dear reader, let this be a call to reflect: Do not let pride, tradition, or blind following keep you from the truth. Allah has sent His messengers with clear proofs and His books with guidance. The path of salvation is simple — it is to believe in Allah alone, to worship Him sincerely, and to accept all His messengers, including Jesus, as His honored servants and prophets. Whoever does so will find peace in this life and safety on that Great Day. And whoever turns away — let them beware of the scene they will inevitably witness. The choice is yours, and the time to choose is now, before that Day arrives when no soul will be able to bargain or return.
