Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Rabbi" (My Lord): The One who created, sustains, and governs all affairs—the sole deity worthy of worship.
- "Fa'budoohu" (So worship Him): Devote all acts of worship—prayer, obedience, love, and submission—exclusively to Him alone.
- "Siratun Mustaqeem" (A Straight Path): The clear, unerring way that leads to Allah’s pleasure and eternal success, free from deviation or crookedness.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) addresses his people with a message that lies at the very heart of Islam: *"And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path."* Jesus declares that he is not a deity to be worshipped, nor a partner with Allah. Rather, he is a servant of Allah, just as every human being is. The Lord who created him, sustained him, and guided him is the very same Lord who created and sustains all of humanity. Therefore, the only fitting response to this universal lordship is to direct all worship—prayer, devotion, trust, and obedience—to Allah alone, without any partners, idols, or intermediaries. Jesus emphasizes that this call to pure monotheism is not a new or strange teaching; it is the straight path that has always been the message of every prophet, from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). It is the path that leads to Allah’s pleasure in this life and His mercy in the Hereafter, and it is the path that safeguards the believer from confusion, misguidance, and the traps of false worship.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder the beauty of this verse: the Messiah himself—one of the mightiest messengers of Allah—stands before his people and proclaims his own servitude to Allah, urging them to worship the One true God. This is a powerful reminder that no human being, however noble or blessed, deserves even a fraction of divine worship. Our salvation lies not in elevating prophets or saints to divine status, but in humbling ourselves before the Creator of the heavens and the earth. This verse invites you to embrace the pure, unadulterated message of monotheism—a message that liberates the soul from the chains of false devotion and connects it directly to its Maker. When you worship Allah alone, you find peace in knowing that your Lord hears you, sees you, and responds to your prayers without any need for intermediaries. This is the straight path—the path of the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. Walk it with confidence, for it leads to the eternal gardens of bliss, where the believers will dwell forever in the presence of their Merciful Lord. Let this verse be a light in your heart, guiding you to the purest form of worship and the most profound sense of purpose.
