The Interpretation:
In this verse, we witness the harsh and painful response of Azar — the father of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) — to his son's gentle and wise call to worship Allah alone. Instead of reflecting on the truth, Azar reacted with anger and arrogance, saying: "Are you turning away from my gods, O Ibrahim?" He could not tolerate that his son would reject the idols he and his forefathers had worshipped for generations.
Azar then issued a terrifying threat: "If you do not stop criticizing and insulting my idols, I will surely stone you to death." This was not an empty threat — it was a declaration of intent to kill his own son. What greater test could there be than a father threatening to murder his child over faith?
Finally, he commanded: "And leave me for a long while" — meaning, depart from my presence, do not speak to me, and stay away from me for a prolonged period. This was a complete severance of the family bond, driven by blind adherence to false beliefs.
This verse teaches us profound lessons. First, the path of truth often comes at a great cost, even the loss of one's closest relatives. Second, Prophet Ibrahim's response — which we see in the following verses — was not one of hatred or revenge, but of mercy and prayer for his father's guidance. He remained patient and kind, even in the face of such hostility.
Dear reader, reflect on the strength of Ibrahim's faith. He stood firm for the truth despite threats of death and exile. His love for Allah outweighed every worldly bond. This is the caliber of faith we should strive for — a faith that does not waver under pressure, and a character that responds to hatred with gentleness and prayer for guidance. Let this be a reminder that no matter how difficult our circumstances, Allah is always with those who are patient and steadfast.
