Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Salāmun ʿalayk – Peace be upon you; a declaration of safety and parting without harm.
- Sā astaghfiru – I will seek forgiveness; asking Allah to pardon and guide.
- Ḥafiyyā – Most gracious, kind, and attentive; One Who is ever mindful of His servant’s needs and responds to supplication.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, we see the beautiful character of Prophet Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) as he responds to his father’s harsh rejection of his call to monotheism. Despite his father’s threats and insults, Ibrāhīm does not retaliate with anger or harsh words. Instead, he says: *“Peace be upon you”* — meaning, “You are safe from me; I will not harm you or repay your harshness with evil.” This is a profound lesson in patience, mercy, and noble conduct, even toward those who oppose us in faith.
He then adds: *“I will ask my Lord to forgive you”* — showing his deep compassion and hope for his father’s guidance and salvation. He did not despair of his father’s repentance but continued to pray for him, hoping that Allah would open his heart to the truth. This reflects the Islamic principle of kindness to parents, even when they are disbelievers, as long as it does not compromise one’s faith.
Finally, Ibrāhīm explains why he is so hopeful: *“Indeed, He has always been gracious to me.”* He acknowledges that Allah has been ever-kind, responsive, and attentive to his prayers and needs throughout his life. This is a reminder that when we recognize Allah’s continuous favors upon us, our trust in Him grows, and our supplications become filled with confidence and sincerity.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse teaches us invaluable lessons for our daily lives. It shows us how to handle conflict with wisdom and gentleness, how to maintain ties of kinship even in the face of disagreement, and how to combine firmness in faith with softness in manner. It also encourages us to turn to Allah in supplication for our loved ones, never losing hope in His mercy. Just as Ibrāhīm trusted that Allah would respond to his prayer for his father, we too should trust that our sincere duʿā’ for our families and communities can bring about transformation. Let us strive to embody this prophetic character — spreading peace, seeking forgiveness, and relying on the Most Gracious, who is ever near and responsive to those who call upon Him.
