Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khalf (خَلْفٌ): A succeeding generation of evil and corrupt people, as opposed to *khalaf* which refers to a righteous successor.
- Aḍā‘ū (أَضَاعُوا): They neglected, wasted, or lost something precious — here, the prayer — by abandoning it entirely, delaying it beyond its prescribed time, or failing to fulfill its essential pillars and obligations.
- Shahawāt (الشَّهَوَاتِ): Desires and lusts — specifically, the forbidden pleasures and whims of the soul that lead a person away from obedience to Allah.
- Ghayy (غَيًّا): A deep valley in Hellfire, extremely hot, from which the other valleys of Hell seek refuge. It also signifies ruin, loss, and misguidance.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Allah Almighty mentioned the noble prophets and their righteous descendants — those who were guided, chosen, and blessed with revelation and mercy — this verse tells us that there came after them a corrupt and wicked generation. These successors did not follow the path of their forefathers; rather, they turned away from the very foundation of faith.
They neglected the prayer — the pillar of religion and the connection between the servant and his Lord. Some of them abandoned it completely, others delayed it beyond its appointed times, and others performed it without fulfilling its conditions, pillars, and obligations. This is the greatest sign of moral and spiritual decay, for the prayer is the first thing a person will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment.
Moreover, they followed their lusts and desires — chasing after forbidden pleasures, indulging in sins such as unlawful relationships, and prioritizing their whims over the commands of Allah. They made their desires their god, and in doing so, they lost both their worldly integrity and their eternal salvation.
The verse concludes with a severe warning: "They will soon meet Ghayy" — a valley in Hellfire so intensely hot that all other valleys of Hell seek refuge from its heat. This is their ultimate destination: ruin, loss, and utter disappointment.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder for every one of us. The prayer is not merely a ritual — it is the lifeline of the believer, the daily appointment with our Creator, and the shield against sin. When we neglect it, we open the door to every kind of corruption in our hearts and lives.
Look at the contrast: the prophets and the righteous maintained their prayers even in the hardest of times, and they were honored by Allah. But those who came after them and wasted this treasure ended up in the deepest misery.
Today, we have the opportunity to be among the *khalaf* — the righteous successors — not the *khalf* — the corrupt ones. Let us hold firmly to our five daily prayers, perform them on time, with humility and presence of heart, and guard ourselves against following our unchecked desires. For whoever protects his prayer, Allah will protect his affairs in this world and the next.
Do not let the pleasures of this fleeting world deceive you. The joy of obeying Allah is far greater, and the reward He has prepared for those who establish their prayers is beyond imagination — gardens of eternal bliss. But the path of negligence leads only to Ghayy. Choose wisely, for the choice is yours, and the time to act is now.
