Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Qarn (قَرْنٍ): A generation or a nation of people living in a particular era; often refers to a past community or civilization.
- Athāthan (أَثَاثًا): Wealth, possessions, and material goods—including clothing, furnishings, and luxury items.
- Ri’yan (رِئْيًا): Appearance, outward form, and visual splendor—how one looks to others in terms of beauty, elegance, and physical allure.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah addresses the arrogance of the disbelievers who boasted about their wealth, status, and fine appearance, thinking that these worldly blessings were a sign of their superiority or divine favor. Allah responds by reminding them of a profound truth: how many nations before them—far more powerful, wealthier, and more splendid in their outward appearance—were utterly destroyed by His command? These past civilizations had finer possessions, more luxurious garments, and more striking physical beauty than the disbelievers of Makkah. Yet, none of that protected them from Allah’s punishment when they rejected His messengers and persisted in their disbelief. Their riches and beauty did not delay their fate for even a moment. This serves as a powerful lesson: worldly splendor is fleeting and deceptive, and it is no guarantee of safety or honor in the sight of Allah. True honor lies in faith, obedience, and righteousness—not in material abundance or physical allure.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this timeless truth. How many empires, dynasties, and civilizations have risen to dazzling heights of wealth and beauty, only to crumble into dust? Their palaces are now ruins, their treasures scattered, and their names forgotten—or remembered only as warnings. Do not be deceived by the glitter of this world, for it is a temporary illusion. The One who created all things—and who holds the power to take them away in an instant—invites you to a life of purpose, humility, and devotion. When you place your trust in Allah and follow His guidance, you attain a beauty that never fades: the beauty of a pure heart, a contented soul, and a life that pleases your Creator. This is the success that truly matters, both in this life and in the Hereafter. So, turn to your Lord with sincerity, and let the lessons of the past guide you to a future of eternal bliss.
