Word Meanings:

  • Naskh (نَنسَخْ): To abrogate, repeal, or replace a ruling or verse with another.
  • Nunsiha (نُنسِهَا): To cause it to be forgotten or to leave it out (i.e., to remove its recitation or its ruling from practice).
  • Āyah (آيَة): A verse of the Qur'an or a divine sign/command.
  • Khayr (خَيْر): Better, more beneficial, or more advantageous.
  • Mithl (مِثْل): Equal, similar, or equivalent.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses a profound reality of divine wisdom: Allah, in His infinite knowledge and perfect planning, may abrogate a previous verse or ruling, or cause it to be forgotten and left behind, and in its place He brings something better or something equal in benefit and reward. This is not a matter of change for the sake of change—far from it. Rather, it is a reflection of Allah's absolute wisdom, tailored to the evolving circumstances of humanity and the stages of revelation.

When the disbelievers of Makkah objected, saying that Muhammad (peace be upon him) commands his followers to do something and then forbids it, replacing it with another command—claiming this was a flaw—Allah responded with this verse, clarifying that abrogation is a sign of divine sovereignty and perfect governance. It demonstrates that Allah, the Creator, knows what is most suitable for His servants at every time and in every situation. He may replace a ruling with one that is easier and lighter, bringing greater ease to the believers, or He may replace it with one that is heavier in obligation but greater in reward and spiritual elevation. In all cases, the replacement is either better for the servants or equal in benefit, never less.

The verse also reassures the believers that this process is not arbitrary. It is carried out by the One who has absolute power over all things—nothing is beyond His ability. He does as He wills and decrees as He desires, and His decrees are always rooted in mercy, wisdom, and justice.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine system. The abrogation of certain rulings was not a sign of inconsistency, but rather a testament to the dynamic and merciful nature of Islamic law. It shows that Allah, in His infinite care, gradually guided the early Muslim community from easier stages to more complete and comprehensive practices, just as a loving teacher builds a student's understanding step by step. This verse invites you to trust in Allah's wisdom completely. When you see that He replaces a command with another, know that it is for your own good—whether in this life or the Hereafter. It is a reminder that Allah's power is limitless, and His knowledge encompasses what is best for you in every moment. So, embrace His guidance with an open heart, for He is the All-Powerful, the All-Wise, and His mercy is beyond your imagination. Let this verse strengthen your certainty that every divine decree, whether it brings ease or challenge, is a pathway to His pleasure and eternal success.

📜 Verse 104-108 — Al-Baqarah

O you who have believed, say not [to Allah 's Messenger], "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna" and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
Neither those who disbelieve from the People of the Scripture nor the polytheists wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allah selects for His mercy whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?
Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and [that] you have not besides Allah any protector or any helper?
Or do you intend to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.
