Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Shuhadaa (شُهَدَاءَ): Witnesses or those present at an event.
  • Hadara (حَضَرَ): Came upon or approached; here it refers to the approach of death.
  • Muslimoon (مُسْلِمُونَ): Those who submit wholeheartedly and are fully obedient to Allah alone.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Were you present, O People of the Book, when death came to Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him? Were you there to witness the final moments of his life and the advice he gave to his children? Of course not — you were not there, so why do you claim things about him and his descendants that contradict what he truly taught?

When the time of his death drew near, Ya'qub gathered his sons around him and asked them a profound question: "What will you worship after I am gone?" This was not a question of uncertainty, but rather a final testament — a moment of teaching and affirmation. He wanted to leave them with the most important truth, the foundation of everything: their relationship with their Creator.

His sons answered with unwavering conviction: "We will worship your God, the God of your fathers Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma'il (Ishmael), and Ishaq (Isaac) — one single God, and to Him we submit completely."

Notice the beautiful unity in their response: they did not say "a god" but "one God" — emphasizing His oneness and uniqueness. They connected their worship to the legacy of their noble ancestors, all of whom were prophets of pure monotheism. And they declared their complete submission — Islam — to Him alone.

This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: the prophets, peace be upon them, were all upon the same message — the worship of Allah alone, without partners. They were Muslims, submitting to their Lord. The religion of all the prophets was Islam in its essence: sincere devotion to the One True God.

Dear reader, reflect on this scene: a dying father, concerned not about his wealth or legacy, but about the faith of his children after him. This is the concern of the true believer. Let us also be concerned about our own families and ensure that the legacy we leave behind is one of faith and submission to Allah.

And let us take pride in this beautiful heritage: we are the spiritual descendants of Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, and Ya'qub — all upon the same pure message. Our worship is directed to the One God alone, and our hearts are fully submitted to Him. This is the essence of Islam — a religion that unites all the prophets and their true followers throughout history.

📜 Verse 131-135 — Al-Baqarah

When his Lord said to him, "Submit", he said "I have submitted [in Islam] to the Lord of the worlds."
And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob, [saying], "O my sons, indeed Allah has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims."
Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac - one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
That was a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.
They say, "Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided." Say, "Rather, [we follow] the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists."
