Surah Al-Baqarah — Verse 163

Word Meanings:

• إِلَٰهُكُمْ (Your God/Ilah): The One who is worshipped, the Deity.
• وَاحِدٌ (One/Wahid): Single, unique, without any partner, peer, or equal in His essence, attributes, and actions.
• لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ (There is no god but Him): There is no deity worthy of worship in truth except Him alone.
• الرَّحْمَٰنُ (Ar-Rahman): The Most Merciful, whose mercy encompasses all of creation in this world.
• الرَّحِيمُ (Ar-Raheem): The Especially Merciful, who bestows His mercy specifically upon the believers in this world and the Hereafter.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O people, your true Deity and the only One deserving your worship is a single God. He is unique and unparalleled in His essence, His names, His attributes, and His actions. There is no partner with Him, no equal to Him, and no rival to His authority. He alone is the Creator, the Sustainer, and the Sovereign of all that exists.

The declaration "There is no god but Him" is the foundation of faith — it affirms that all forms of worship, whether prayer, supplication, sacrifice, or reliance, must be directed exclusively to Him. Anything worshipped besides Him — be it an idol, a human, a celestial body, or a desire — is false and void.

He is Ar-Rahman, whose mercy is vast and all-encompassing, reaching every creature in this worldly life — the believer and the disbeliever, the righteous and the wicked, humans and animals alike. His mercy provides sustenance, health, and countless blessings to all. And He is Ar-Raheem, whose special mercy is reserved for the believers — guiding them to faith, forgiving their sins, and admitting them into eternal Paradise.

Reflect, dear reader, on the beauty of this verse. It calls you to a truth that liberates the soul: there is only One God, and He is not a distant, harsh deity, but a Lord whose mercy fills the universe.
