Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah addresses the Children of Israel—the descendants of Prophet Ya‘qūb (peace be upon him)—with a call full of mercy and reminder. He commands them to remember His abundant favors, which He bestowed upon their forefathers and upon them: the saving of their ancestors from Pharaoh, the parting of the sea, the sending down of manna and quails, the shade of clouds, and many other blessings. This remembrance is not merely a mental recall, but a heartfelt gratitude that leads to obedience and worship.
Allah then makes a solemn covenant with them: "Fulfill My covenant, and I will fulfill your covenant." His covenant to them is to believe in all His messengers, including the final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and to act upon His revealed laws. In return, Allah promises them His covenant: a good life in this world, mercy, and salvation in the Hereafter. This is a beautiful exchange—servants fulfill their duty, and the Lord of the Worlds fulfills His promise of reward and grace.
The verse concludes with a profound command: "And fear Me alone." This fear is not a paralyzing terror, but a reverent awe that prevents one from breaking the covenant and falling into disobedience. It is a call to single out Allah in worship, trust, and hope, and to be mindful that He sees all deeds and will hold everyone accountable.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all humanity, not just the Children of Israel. It teaches us the importance of gratitude—when we remember Allah’s blessings, our hearts soften, and our faith strengthens. It also highlights the beauty of Allah’s covenant: He does not ask of us anything except that He gives us far more in return. If we fulfill His commands with sincerity, He grants us peace in this life and eternal bliss in the next. And the call to fear Allah alone reminds us that true success lies in aligning our hearts with His will, turning away from all that displeases Him. This is the path of the believers—a path of gratitude, commitment, and hope in the mercy of the Most Merciful. Let us embrace this call with open hearts, for it is the key to a life of purpose and a hereafter of everlasting joy.
