Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bāri'ikum (بَارِئِكُمْ): Your Creator and Maker, the One who brought you into existence from nothing.
- Fāqtulū anfusakum (فَاقْتُلُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ): Kill yourselves — meaning that the innocent among them should kill the guilty ones who worshipped the calf, as a form of purification and expiation.
- Tawwāb (التَّوَّابُ): The One Who constantly accepts repentance and turns His servants back to Him in mercy.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Remember, O Children of Israel, the immense favour of Allah upon you when He guided you to sincere repentance after your grave sin. Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) addressed his people who had worshipped the golden calf, saying: "O my people, you have indeed wronged yourselves — you have harmed your own souls and brought spiritual ruin upon yourselves — by taking the calf as an object of worship instead of Allah, the Almighty. This was a tremendous injustice, for you exchanged the worship of the Creator for the worship of a lifeless statue."
He then commanded them: "So turn in repentance to your Creator — return to Him with humility and submission. The way to expiate this sin is that the innocent among you must execute the guilty ones who actively participated in worshipping the calf. This act of killing yourselves — meaning the righteous killing the wrongdoers — is better for you in the sight of your Creator than remaining in your sin, which would lead to eternal punishment in the Fire. It is a purification for your souls and a means to regain Allah's pleasure."
The people obeyed this command with complete submission, and Allah, in His infinite mercy, accepted their repentance and forgave them. Indeed, He is the Most Accepting of Repentance — He turns to His servants with forgiveness and compassion, and He is the Most Merciful to those who sincerely return to Him.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us that sincere repentance is not merely words uttered by the tongue, but a transformation of the heart and a commitment to rectify our wrongs. The Children of Israel were willing to pay the ultimate price to purify themselves from sin — how much easier is it for us to turn back to Allah with a truthful heart, seeking His forgiveness through prayer, charity, and good deeds?
Allah's mercy is vast and His door of repentance is always open. No matter how great your sins may be, know that your Lord is the Tawwāb — the One Who loves to forgive and repeatedly accepts the repentance of His servants. Do not despair of Allah's mercy, for He says in another verse: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful" (Az-Zumar 39:53). Turn to Him now, before it is too late, and experience the sweetness of His forgiveness and the peace that comes with a purified soul.
