Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jahratan (جَهْرَةً): Openly, visibly, with our own eyes — not through hearing or indirect means.
- Al-Sa'iqah (الصَّاعِقَةُ): A thunderbolt or a devastating blast of fire from the sky that strikes with overwhelming force, causing instant death.
- Wa antum tanzurūn (وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ): While you were looking on — witnessing the punishment with your own eyes, some of you watching others.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, remember that time when your forefathers, the Children of Israel, spoke to Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) with shocking arrogance and insolence. They said: "O Musa, we will never believe you — we will not accept that the words you convey are truly from Allah — until we see Allah with our own eyes, openly and directly, with nothing veiling Him." This was an audacious demand, a transgression against the majesty of Allah, for no human being in this worldly life can endure the sight of Allah's glory.
In response to their defiance, Allah's wrath descended upon them. A thunderbolt — a blazing fire from the heavens — struck them, and they perished instantly, while they were looking at one another, witnessing the very punishment they had brought upon themselves through their insolence. Some of them watched as others were seized by death, a terrifying scene that left no room for doubt about the consequences of challenging Allah's commands.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the gravity of demanding signs beyond what Allah has chosen to reveal. The Children of Israel had already witnessed countless miracles — the parting of the sea, manna and quails descending from heaven, water gushing from a rock — yet their hearts remained hardened, and they dared to ask for what no prophet could grant. Their punishment was swift and absolute, yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, later revived them as a lesson and a sign, as mentioned in other verses.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this story touch your heart. How fortunate are we, the followers of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), that Allah has made faith easy for us — we believe in the unseen, trusting in His wisdom and the truth of His messengers, without demanding impossible proofs. The Qur'an invites us to a faith that is pure and sincere, a faith that recognizes Allah's greatness and submits to His will with love and humility. Do not be like those who insisted on seeing before believing, for their insistence led only to destruction. Instead, open your heart to the light of guidance, and let the beauty of Islam fill your soul with peace. Allah, the Most Merciful, has promised that those who believe and do righteous deeds will be rewarded with gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. This is the true success — so hasten to it before the thunderbolt of regret strikes, and embrace the path of submission to your Lord, the Most Compassionate.
