- Al-Furqan (الْفُرْقَانَ): The Criterion — that which distinguishes between truth and falsehood, right and wrong, guidance and misguidance. It is another name for the Torah itself, emphasizing its role as a decisive separator.
- La'allakum (لَعَلَّكُمْ): So that you may — expressing purpose and hope.
- Tah'tadoon (تَهْتَدُونَ): Be guided — attain guidance and walk upon the path of truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah reminds the Children of Israel — and by extension all of humanity — of one of His greatest favors upon them: He gave Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, the Torah, a comprehensive divine Book that serves as a clear criterion (Furqan) between truth and falsehood. This Book was not merely a collection of laws; it was a complete system of life, containing light, guidance, and mercy. Through it, Allah distinguished the lawful from the unlawful, the pure from the impure, and the path of salvation from the path of destruction.
The mention of "Al-Furqan" alongside "Al-Kitab" highlights the very purpose of revelation: to give humanity a decisive standard by which to judge all matters. The Torah was a beacon that illuminated the darkness of ignorance, freeing people from the bondage of superstition, idolatry, and moral corruption. It was a divine mercy that equipped them with the knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of life with certainty.
The phrase "so that you may be guided" reveals the ultimate goal of all divine revelation: guidance. Allah did not send the Book to burden people, but to save them — to lead them from the shadows of doubt into the light of certainty. This same purpose continues today with the Qur'an, the final and most complete revelation, which stands as the eternal Furqan for all of humanity until the end of time.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has never left humanity without guidance. He sent prophets, revealed Books, and established clear signs — all for one purpose: that you may be guided to what is best for you in this life and the next. The Torah was a mercy to its people, and the Qur'an is an even greater mercy to us. It is a living miracle, preserved word for word, addressing every age and every generation.
So ask yourself: Have I truly made the Qur'an my Furqan — my criterion for every decision, every relationship, every ambition? Have I allowed its light to illuminate my heart and purify my soul? The path to true success lies in embracing this divine guidance with sincerity and humility. When you open the Book of Allah, you are not merely reading words — you are receiving a direct message from your Creator, a message designed to elevate you, protect you, and lead you to eternal bliss.
Let this verse inspire you to renew your connection with the Qur'an. Read it, understand it, and live by it. For whoever holds fast to the Book of Allah and follows its guidance shall never be lost — in this world or the Hereafter. This is the promise of Allah, and His promise is true.
