📖 English Meaning
So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Wayl (ويل): A severe punishment, destruction, or a valley in Hell; a word of threat and woe.
  • Yaktubūna al-Kitāb (يكتبون الكتاب): They write the book/scripture — meaning they fabricate and write something themselves.
  • Thamanan Qalīlā (ثمناً قليلاً): A small price — referring to worldly gains, wealth, status, or material benefits that are insignificant compared to the Hereafter.
  • Mimmā kasabū (مما يكسبون): What they earn — the illicit gains they acquire through their deception.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse delivers a stern and terrifying warning to those who distort the truth and attribute their own words to Allah. It specifically addresses the corrupt scholars among the People of the Book who, driven by worldly desires, wrote books with their own hands and then falsely claimed, "This is from Allah." They did this to mislead people and to secure a small, fleeting share of worldly gain — whether money, status, or influence — in exchange for betraying the divine message.

The verse declares: "So woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn." This double condemnation highlights two grave sins: first, the act of fabricating lies against Allah and altering His revelation; and second, the unlawful profit they gained through such deception. Their crime was not merely a mistake — it was a deliberate, calculated distortion of sacred truth for personal benefit.

This serves as a timeless lesson for all humanity: never trade the truth for worldly gain, and never misrepresent Allah's words to suit your interests. The scholars and those who convey religious knowledge bear an even greater responsibility — they must be the guardians of truth, not its corruptors. The verse reminds us that Allah sees all, and no amount of worldly wealth can compensate for the loss of one's soul in the Hereafter.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a powerful call to integrity and sincerity. It teaches us that faith is not a commodity to be sold, and the words of Allah are not a means to accumulate wealth or power. As Muslims, we must hold firmly to the Qur'an and Sunnah, and beware of those who twist religion for personal gain. It also invites us to reflect: Are we sincere in our worship and our dealings? Do we speak the truth even when it is against our interests? The promise of Allah is clear — those who uphold truth will be honored, and those who distort it will face a painful reckoning. Let this verse inspire us to be among the truthful, the trustworthy, and the sincere — for the reward with Allah is far greater than anything this world can offer.

📜 Verse 77-81 — Al-Baqarah

But do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare?
And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking, but they are only assuming.
So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.
And they say, "Never will the Fire touch us, except for a few days." Say, "Have you taken a covenant with Allah? For Allah will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?"
Yes, whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
